School board to be reshaped

FORT JENNINGS — Significant changes will take place to the school board here after Tuesday. Board members Mike Gerdeman and Dennis Metzger are not seeking re-election, while Karl Schimmoeller is up for re-election but seeks more than a two-year term. Donald Good will also be on the ballot but after Tuesday, someone will still need to be appointed because one two-year term will be open. There are also two challengers asking for voter support.
Schimmoeller has been on the board for two years. He is asking voters to move him into the four-year seat in lieu of Superintendent Frank Sukup’s departure at the end of the academic year.
“The biggest thing going on for us is preparing for our superintendent’s retiring and how we approach our administration from that point forward. We’ll have some opportunities to look to improve the efficiency of how we manage, how we administer the school system,” he said. “This seat is available because it was an appointed position. Since I’m up for re-election, I decided to go ahead and seek the four-year term so, if I win, I can be around to provide the board with the stability it will need through the transition. As far as finances are concerned, we’re on good financial ground. We have the levy up for renewal and as long as it passes, we’re okay.”
The other incumbent, Good, did not return messages left by The Delphos Herald.
Deb Calvelage is running because she wants to have a positive influence on her community.
“I’m a member of the Fort Jennings community; I have children in the school and would like to have a bigger impact. I’m running because there are people stepping down from the school board and ‘they’ approached me and asked if I was interested. I took an interest a year and a half ago when there was an opening, so I decided to go ahead and run,” she said.
The other challenger is Brad Louth.
“I want to get education back in the forefront with all of the families and children; to make sure education is their top priority,” he said. “I think we need greater parental participation, as well as the faculty. People need to be more aware of school functions; we need to bring parents back by keeping them very well informed of what’s going on and everything the school wants, needs and expects from them.”
