GLANDORF — The Kalida Lady Wildcats sat in wait during the opening Division II sectional soccer contest at Titan Field in Glandorf on Monday evening.
They knew going into their late contest against Van Buren that they would have to battle last year’s regional finalist, the Liberty-Benton Lady Eagles, who dominated the Cory-Rawson Lady Hornets 5-0 in the earlier contest
Nonetheless, the LadyCats took down the Black Knights by a near count of 4-0.
Kara Kaufman scored twice and Amanda Schulte added a goal to go along with an own-goal by the Knights, giving the LadyCats a date against Liberty-Benton in the sectional finals on Thursday.
Kalida struggled early in the contest as the Lady Knights kept them off the scoreboard.
However, the orange and black gave the Wildcats a gift with 4:45 to go in the first half when Kayla Konkle knocked the ball into her own net for an own-goal score, making it a 1-0 Kalida lead.
That lead would carry into the second half but wouldn’t stay that way for long.
Kalida placed the ball into the net three times in a 10-minute span to take control of the matchup.
Van Buren nearly got on the board midway into the second half as Konkle banged the ball off the crossbar for one of their mere three shots on goal, compared to 19 for the maroon and gold.
Kaufman made it a 2-0 score on a penalty kick off a Van Buren foul inside the box at 28:12.
Schulte send a rocket into the area from 25 yards out that stymied Van Buren goalkeeper, Kaleigh Frampton (12 saves) that gave the LadyCats a 3-0 advantage with 19:34 to go.
Kalida would seal the victory moments later when Kaufman netted her second goal of the match.
For the second match in a row, the Kalida goalkeeper, senior Stephanie Kortokrax, had little to do in the net as the senior had three shots sent her way and saved all three.
The Wildcats will now prepare for their Thursday melee against the Lady Eagles. That match starts at 5 p.m.
