DELPHOS — The Delphos Jefferson girls soccer team took on Botkins Thursday night at the St. John’s Annex soccer complex on a cold and rainy evening.
The Jeffcats got down early in the match but battled back and got a very late goal to tie it up and not give the Wildcats another loss on the season.
Seven Lady Wildcat seniors played their final home matches: Brittney Garza, Adrian Kimmet, Jeanie Ross, Jessica Bland, Ashley Simerly, Alex Rostorfer and Megan Moreo.
Botkins got on the board first in this game at the 30:17 mark in the first half when Brooke McGowan took a shot-on-goal and snuck it past Bland to put the Trojans up 1-0 early in the contest.
The Wildcats didn’t dwell on being down early, however, and responded at the 13:07 mark when Moreo took a penalty-kick shot and drilled it to the back of the net to tie the match up by a score of 1-1.
With just under five minutes left in the first half of action, Botkins struck again. Hannah Koch booted it past Bland and gave her team a 2-1 lead at the 4:17 mark heading into halftime.
The Wildcats found themselves in a position they were in before in the first half and they responded the same way.
With 21:50 left in the contest, Moreo took a corner kick and sophomore Elizabeth Schosker “used her head” and butted it in the goal to tie things up once again at 2-2.
The Wildcat defense found itself with a lot of pressure off of them during the second half. The Wildcat offense was full of life and challenging the Botkins keeper almost the whole second half.
However, tragedy struck the Wildcats with 1:30 left in the match when Jean Goettemoeller’s kick found the back of the net and gave Botkins a 3-2 lead with just over a minute left to go in the contest.
However, the Red and White do not know when to say quit and kept on battling, hoping their efforts prevailed. And they did.
Schosker took a shot from about 30 yards deep and her kick sailed over the head of the Trojan keeper to tie the matchup up at 3-3.
Jefferson coach Lindsey Drerup was very pleased with how the game ended up despite the tie.
“A win would have been great but I can’t ask for much more out of these girls. They played their hearts out tonight and never gave up when they were down and that is a good sign as we head into tournament action,” she said.
As the Wildcats get ready for the tournament, they finished off their season Thursday night making them 6-8-1 on the year.
They will play Bluffton in a Division II tournament match as they try to win their first tournament game in the program’s history. That battle will start at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Ottoville Soccer Stadium.
