DELPHOS — With the post-season tournament right around the corner, the Delphos Jefferson girls soccer team is anxious to show everyone what they can do.
Monday night at the Annex, the Jeffcats played host to Cory-Rawson as a “tune-up” game for the post-season.
The Lady ’Cats came to play Monday night as they defeated the Hornets by a score of 4-1.
The Wildcats scored first in the contest when freshman Jenna Moreo scored at the 24:47 mark in the first half of action to put the home team up 1-0.
The ’Cats’ defense played brilliantly in the first half as they blanked the Hornets in the first 40 minutes and took that 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Wildcats came out strong in the second half and were looking to add to their lead.
With 38:01 ticks left, senior Megan Moreo took a penalty-kick shot and drilled it into the net to give the hosts a 2-0 lead early in the second half of action.
The Wildcats’ offense was full of attacks in the second 40 minutes and the Hornets didn’t have an answer.
The senior Moreo struck again for the Jeffcats at the 31:56 mark and blew the Wildcat lead up to 3-0 with a lot of time on the scoreboard.
With a 3-0 lead, the Wildcats were looking to put the finishing touch on a well-played game.
Senior Jeanie Ross took advantage of an error by the Hornets’ keeper as she dropped the ball; Ross was there to boot it in for the score to put the home team up 4-0 with 27:46 left to play.
The Hornets were looking to make a comeback. Erika Franz made the first — and what turned out to be the only — step in that direction as she took a penalty kick and drilled it over Jefferson senior keeper Jessica Bland (7 saves on 8 shots-on-goal) to put the Hornets down 4-1 with 26:27 left in the match.
The Wildcat defense held the Hornets scoreless for the rest of the night as they played almost flawlessly the whole game. Jefferson was able to control the ball for most of the second half and went on to win by a 3-goal margin.
Jefferson coach Lindsey Drerup was very happy with the performance that she got from her team Monday night.
“We executed very well today and are starting to look like a good team,” she observed. “It’s all about the little details now as we get ready for the tournament and this game gives us some momentum to thrive from and also gives us some confidence.”
With the win, the Wildcats move to 6-8 on the year and will play host to Botkins on Thursday with a start time of 5 p.m.
