DELPHOS — Delphos Jefferson hosted Anna in girls varsity soccer non-conference action Saturday morning at the St. John’s Annex.
The aggressive Anna Rockets controlled the pace most of the game, having 23 shots-on-goal to Jefferson’s 10 on their way to giving the Wildcats their sixth loss on the season by a score of 5-1.
Senior defender Ashley Simerly returned to the Wildcat lineup after being out since late August with an ankle injury.
Anna came out strong and set the pace in the first half. Within the first 30 seconds of play, Anna scored its first goal on a 15-yard bullet from senior Nicole Schmidt to put Anna ahead 1-0.
Before the Wildcats knew what hit them, Anna sophomore striker Kyleigh Overbey broke loose on a solo run and fired in the Rockets’ second goal just three minutes into the game.
Anna continued to keep the pressure on and before Jefferson could get its first shot-on-goal, Overbey got her second goal and the team’s third, another breakaway run. That 18-yard strike put Anna up 3-0 and left the Wildcats stunned.
Jefferson finally started moving the ball, getting its first shot-on-goal almost midway through the first half but were still out shot 13-3 in the half (2 of Jefferson’s shots came off Anna penalties).
Jefferson, still unable to find an answer to the Rockets’ jet-fueled attack, gave up the fourth goal to Anna senior Erica Schrage, hitting from 10 yards out off the assist by Jenise Berning at the 8-minute mark.
The Rockets continued their domination three minutes later when Overbey got her hat trick and Anna’s fifth goal on another breakaway run to put the Rockets up 5-0.
That would be the score at the half. Jefferson’s Jessica Bland had eight saves in the half but the five goals were mostly 1-on-1 situations.
It seemed the second half was going to be much like the first with Anna outshooting Jefferson 9-1 midway through the half. Bland (picking up 5 saves in the second half) and the Jefferson defense dug deep and kept the Rockets out of the net, giving up 10 shots-on-goal but allowing no score.
Jefferson picked up the pace in the last 10 minutes of the match, getting five shots-on-goal and making one count when senior forward Megan Moreo scored from 15 yards out at the 9:50 mark and avoiding the shutout.
Unfortunately, the surge by the Wildcats came too late and fell to Anna 5-1.
Jefferson coach Lindsey Drerup commented on her team’s tale of two halves: “It is a consistency factor. Anna came out strong and hard and we have to find a way to get ourselves motivated.”
Coach Drerup also commented on her team’s late surge: “The last 10 minutes, the funny thing is I took all my starters out basically and moved my goalie around and things looked a little bit better.”
Jefferson (4-6) will move on to face LCC at Lima Stadium at 7 p.m. Tuesday; Anna (9-2) will take on Botkins at home.
