KALIDA — St. John’s traveled to Kalida to take on the LadyCats in varsity volleyball action Saturday morning.
The Lady Blue Jays were trying to improve while Kalida was trying to avoid its second loss of the season.
After dropping the first set 25-20, the Lady Jays took the match by winning the next three by scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 26-24.
Both teams came out strong in the first set. Solid play at the net by Kalida’s Julia Fuerst (16 kills) and St. John’s Lindsy Reindel kept this a back-and-forth battle. With the score 21-17 and Kalida pulling away, St. John’s coach Kellie Sterling called a timeout to settle her players down. The Blue Jays made a late run but Kalida held it off to take the first set.
Delphos was relentless the next two sets. The Lady Jays jumped out to early leads in both sets: 10-3 in the second set, 13-5 in the third. St. John’s blocking was too much and the Jays easily took the next two sets by 12 and 15 points, respectively.
Kalida (9-2) was not going to go out without a fight. The two squads again found themselves in a battle similar to the first set. Slowly, Delphos started to pull away as the score was 22-16. A late rally by the LadyCats brought the score to 22-21 when coach Sterling called timeout to slow the Kalida charge. After the break, the two teams went back at it with scores of 22-22 and 24-24 until the Jays finally put them away for good to win the set and the match 3-1.
Sterling was very pleased with her team’s effort.
“We started off sluggish in game one but we picked up the pace and finished strong,” she said.
When asked about the nail-biting finish, she responded “I was happy that they stayed focused at the end to get the win.”
Leading the LadyCats were Trisha Horstman (9 kills), Emily Turnwald (4 kills, 20 assists, 3 aces) and Stacie Heitmeyer (4 aces, 14 digs).
St. John’s will host Lincolnview 5:30 p.m. (junior varsity start) today while Kalida moves on to host Putnam County League foe Miller City on Tuesday (6 p.m. JV).
In the JV match Saturday, Kalida took set one 25-17, while the Jays took the next two 25-19, 25-18.
