Restaurant ownership an essay away

Caballero’s Landeck Tavern owner Kyle Caballero will give his restaurant to the winning essay in “Why I Should Own a Restaurant” contest as long as 2,200 people enter.LANDECK — Kyle Caballero, owner of Caballero’s Landeck Tavern, is offering his restaurant as first prize in an essay-writing contest.
The 60-day contest requires participants to write a 250-word (or less) essay on “Why I Should Own a Restaurant” and enclose a $200 entry fee.
The historic Landeck Tavern has been in business for over 75 years, starting out as a converted streetcar in downtown Landeck. Caballero, a Louisiana native, purchased the Tavern in 2001 and added Cajun recipes to the menu.
The restaurant has been recently remodeled to include a new bar area, banquet room, the addition of an outside patio/bar and sand beach volleyball court. The restaurant has been valued at $500,000 and has averaged over $450,000 in revenue the past nine years.
“With the present banking situation, waiting for a buyer could take months. I decided a contest was a great way for me to succeed in a short time period, while giving someone else the opportunity to live the American Dream,” Caballero said.
The contest is scheduled to end on midnight, Oct. 31. Participants can submit their submission electronically by going to www.winmyrestaurant.com. Entries will be judged by an independent group of journalists. The judges will look for the following elements:
• Meeting the 250-word and first-person narrative requirements (pass/fail only)
• Basic writing and grammatical skills (1-10 scale)
• Passion (1-10 scale)
• Creativity (1-10 scale)
• Content (1-10 scale)
Contestants must be 21 years of age or older and live in Ohio, Michigan or Indiana.
The winner will be required to change the name from Caballeros to another business name; Landeck Tavern may be used. There is no substitution of cash for prize.
The winner will be notified on Nov. 25.
The contest can be ended by the operator in the event that less than 2,200 entries have been received on or before Oct. 22. If the contest is ended because insufficient entries have been received, the entrant will receive a refund of the entry fee, less a $20 fee used to process the transaction and administrative costs.
