Library to drop one genealogy program

Approximately 100 children attended Doodle Art with Sarah Pohlman Wednesday at Delphos Public Library. Next Wednesday’s program will be Acting Out and the following week will feature Family Night at 6:30 p.m. with Zak Morgan at the Jefferson Middle School auditorium All programs are open to children in grades K-5.DELPHOS — Genealogy buffs will only have one computer program for research at the Delphos Public Library as of July 1.
Board members on Monday agreed to cancel the library’s subscription to Heritage Quest and keep Ancestry.com.
Library Director Nancy Mericle reported at the May meeting the cost to renew both programs would come to about $1,200, with Ancestry taking up roughly $927 of that estimate and Heritage Quest $262. Ancestry was used 98 times over a period of nearly a year and Heritage Quest was used 42 times over the same period.
“Even though the programs have been used 42 and 98 times over the last year, it is likely that it was only a couple of people using them,” she said. “Even if that is the case, it’s obvious that the people who use it really love it. Both programs do basically the same thing but since Ancestry was used nearly twice as much, that tells us that it is either easier to use or it gives you more information. But it’s also the more expensive one.”
Since the May meeting, several people had come to the library with donations, including a woman who learned the library needed a new fax machine. She gave the library a donation of $350 and said since the Delphos City Schools had lent the library a fax machine, her donation could be used toward the subscription price of Ancestry.com. Another gentleman had found an LP he had taken out from the library in the 1980s and not returned. He returned it along with a CD of the same album and $100. Also, a Red Hat group gave a donation of $30 to the library after a tour. All of these gifts will be used toward the renewal of Ancestry.com.
The library is also looking for a 1998 Delphi Jefferson High School yearbook. The yearbook is needed for the genealogy room.
The board received correspondence from Garman and Miller Architects concerning work on the new building at Jefferson and First streets. The company is requesting the library contact electrical contractors about work needed at the new structure so they can give an estimate of the project.
Board members agreed to contact Delphos contractors and show them the plans for updating the building to receive the estimates.
Children’s Librarian Denise Cressman reported there are 320 children in the summer reading program. More than 100 showed up for the first session Wednesday afternoon for Doodle Art with Sarah Pohlman. She requested the purchase of two more tables to accommodate the size of the groups participating in the Wednesday events. The board agreed to purchase the tables.
The library will have a new long-distance provider as of July 1. Communications Options, Inc., (COI) will step in as the new provider at a substantial savings.
