DELPHOS — The Jefferson boys basketball team moved to 4-3 with a big win over Lima Temple Christian Saturday night at “The Stage” at Delphos Jefferson Middle School.
The Jeffcats routed their foe by a score of 69-34.
The ’Cats were led offensively by senior Matt Gerdeman with a double-double: 13 points and 10 boards, along with 4 assists. Senior center Josh Miller added 12 points, as did junior guard Jordan Jettinghoff, all coming on 3s.
“We played very unselfish basketball tonight having 10 of our 13 players having at least 2 points. Adding to that, we had very good intensity on both deffense and offense,” Jefferson head coach Marc Smith said.
Temple Christian was led by the Sutton brothers — Tyler with 17 markers and Austin with 8.
“I have a lot of respect for Temple Christian; they are a solid basketball team and very well-coached,” commented Smith after Saturday night’s home victory.
Jefferson’s first half was the key to their victory as they outscored the Pioneers by a score of 36-11 — 19-7 in the first eight minutes — thanks to the big post play of Miller and Gerdeman for the Wildcats.
That dup helped the Wildcats shoot 24-of-43 from the field (55.8%). That included a strong 18-of-27 on 2s and 6-of-16 on 3s. They added 15-of-25 at the line (60%).
They also helped the Red and White completely dominate the glass 36-12 (15-1 offensive) as seniors Matthew Antalis and Bubba Shivley and Junior Craig Carder added 5 boards each.
Sophomore Ryan Ebbeskotte delivered 4 assists and Carder 3 of the team total of 22.
The Widlcat defense limited the Pioneers to 13-of-35 shooting (5-of-13 downtown) for 37.1 percent. They hit all three free throws. They also turned it over 16 times to Jefferson’s 12 and had 18 fouls (11 for the hosts).
“We played four good quarters of basketball and that’s what we need to keep on doing for next week’s game at Lincolnview,” added Jefferson’s head coach.
The Wildcats will travel to Lincolnview to take on the Lancers Friday night in Northwest Conference action, with a 6:30 p.m. JV start.
In JV action Saturday, the Wildcats also won, this time by a score of 29-18
Jefferson’s Logan Wurst had 11 points to lead all scorers.
