Hilary W. Burgei, 89, of Kalida, died at 2 a.m. Thursday at the Meadows of Kalida.
He was born Oct. 10, 1918, in Cloverdale, to Michael and Pauline (Pittner) Burgei.
On Feb. 24, 1941, he married Marie Altenburger, who died on May 13, 2006.
Survivors include sons James (Susie) Burgei of Kalida and Ken “Kurly” (Linda) Burgei of Fort Jennings; daughter Jane (Thomas) Trentman of Delphos; sisters Miriam (Norman) Kamann of Toledo, Agnes King of Delta, Helen Koester of Ottoville, Dorothy Kahle of Kalida and Mildred (Bill) Pollick of Dublin; brother Paul Burgei of Ottoville; sister-in-law Mary Jane Burgei of Cloverdale; and nine grandchildren: Larry (Dawn), Dennis (Laura), Michael (Beth), Randy (Gail) Trentman; Jamie (Evelyn), Jared (Dawn), Joel (Gina) and Todd Burgei; and Krista (Sean) Telljohann.
He is also survived by 18 great grandchildren: Matthew, Sarah, Shonda, Riley, Ava and Neven Trentman, Richard Cocuzza, Paige, Madison, Conner, Cooper, Mackenzie, Colton, Jordan and Dale Burgei; and Ivan, Sage and Laura Telljohann.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Annette Kromer, Margaret Maas and Louise Burgei; his brother, Lawrence Burgei and great grandson Reese Burgei.
Mr. Burgei was a World War II veteran who served with the 9th Division of the United States Army Air Forces. He retired from Ford Motor Company in 1980 after 21 years of employment; had worked at the tank plant in Lima and was a lifelong farmer.
He held memberships with St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kalida, the Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name Society, the American Legion post in Continental, National Farmers Organization and United Auto Workers Local 1219.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Rev. Ken Alt officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Continental American Legion.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home’s Jackson Township location, where a scripture service will start at 3 p.m. Sunday and a Knights of Columbus Rosary service at 7. p.m. Sunday.
Preferred memorials are to Putnam County Hospice.
