DELPHOS — The Ada Bulldogs volleyball team came to Delphos to battle Jefferson for a Northwest Conference matchup.
The Lady Wildcats sent them home on the short end of a 25-14, 25-16, 25-13 decision.
During the first game, the ball traveled back and forth without either team having control. Neither team could carry out any big plays but the Wildcats (15-5, 6-3 NWC) had enough to carry the day.
In the second game, the Bulldogs were up 6-2 as Amanda Fullom and Sara Cole gave the Wildcats a run for their money at the net. With a couple of good blocks and kills, Jefferson senior Ashley Watkins stepped up her play and helped bring in the second win of the night to put the hosts up two games to none.
The third game started off with a bang. Jefferson junior Mallorie Wilson and sophomore Kristin Klausing ran off six straight points serving. That got them off and running toward the sweep.
Just like in past matches, junior Courtnie Rostorfer and sophomore Bridget Culp played a good game. Culp at the net and Rostorfer in the backcourt equaled points for the Wildcats.
“We know Ada had been struggling; we have been struggling a little bit ourselves, not that we played bad. We’re not getting into the flow that we need to at tournament time,” Jefferson coach Diane Wilson explained. “We were concerned about being exhausted from last night’s game with Wayne Trace. We wanted to play hard for the seniors tonight, for the parents.”
Ada head coach Melissa Klingler was very blunt about her team’s play.
“Our performance tonight stunk. They are playing with no desire whatsoever,” Klingler explained. “The whole match was kind of dead and lacked enthusiasm. When we step on the court, we need to put all our other problems behind and just go out there and focus and play, but I’m disappointed in their lack of heart.”
Jefferson visits Kalida Thursday night before beginning tournament play next Tuesday versus Ottoville at the Lincolnview Division IV sectional.
“Since the Grove game last Tuesday, we played Thursday, a doubleheader Saturday, Monday, (today), then we play again Thursday. I think we’re tired,” Wilson added. ”We are mentally and physically overwhelmed. We do not have a lot to brag about. We had a lot of people in tonight for the home crowd; we got the job done. That is all we wanted to accomplish tonight; get it done, rest and be ready for the big game on Thursday.”
This was Ada’s last regular-season play and they finish at 13-9. They have a week and a half — due to a first-round bye — before their tournament match versus the winner of Lima Temple Christian and Ridgemont.
