Lady Jays down Ottoville 4-1

OTTOVILLE — The St. John’s girls soccer unit was looking to get the bad taste of out its mouth from a 3-3 tie with LCC on Saturday — after a second-half collapse — when they took on Ottoville Tuesday night.
There would be no second-half letdown this night as the Lady Blue Jays finished the regular season with a 4-1 victory at the Ottoville Soccer Complex.
It ruined Senior Day for seven Ottoville seniors: Kayla Boecker, Chelsea Bowers, Nadine Buettner, Lauren Hoersten, Alyssa Honigford, Andrea Horstman and Abby Krouskop.
“We challenged the girls on that; to play 80 minutes. Overall, we did that; we had no letdown,” Jays coach Jodi Hoersten explained. “We had excellent touches; our passing was excellent. We moved the ball well inside and out and back; we also had good spacing. That allowed us to open up the field and you saw the result.”
Ottoville (4-9-2) head man Kevin Krouskop was not a happy camper.
“Congratulations to St. John’s. They played a great game; we did not,” he commented.
It was all about taking advantage of opportunities this night. The Jays (7-7-2) did; they only outshot their hosts 16-11.
The Blue and Gold nearly scored a mere 11 ticks in but Tatum Mauk’s 15-yarder from the right wing hit the crossbar and Lynn Beining kicked the orb out of danger before another shot could be taken.
Both keepers made nice stops, with Jays’ sophomore Samantha Stant having nine saves and Ottoville sophomore counterpart Nikki Kimmet 11.
Kimmet made a diving stop of an offering from senior Tori Recker at 37:19.
With 33:35 on the first-half clock, the Jays broke the ice. Recker’s shot from the left wing ricocheted high off a defender; before Kimmet could secure the sphere, sophomore Becca Saine pooched it over her head from the left post to the right side from eight yards that barely crossed the goal line for a 1-0 edge.
The Big Green seemed to get juiced after that and pushed the attack. However, they could not convert, with their best chance an 18-yarder from the right wing by junior Mandy Kramer that hit the far post; the follow shot by sophomore Kari Beining went wide left.
The Jays went up 2-0 with 13:08 on the clock. Sophomore Emma Boggs passed to Saine in the middle; she one-touched it to herself to get around the defender. She shot from 15 yards in the middle; Kimmet dove to stop it but the ball took a wicked hop over her and into the twine.
Stant stopped two chances: at 9:07, denying freshman Lauren Koch from 15 yards; and at 1:41, nabbing junior Jessica Beining’s laser from 30 yards.
Kimmet denied Saine from 18 yards at 11:20 and sophomore Bailey Calvelage from 15 yards at 6:10.
However, she could not deny Saine at 4:20.  Calvelage’s through ball found Saine on the right wing; she had Kimmet leaning to the keeper’s left when she fired from 14 yards the opposite way for a 3-0 edge.
It stayed that way as the keepers stood strong, with Stant stopping  a 10-yard blast by Kari Beining at 32:04 of the second half.
Ottoville had other prime chances that didn’t go: at 28:52, when a defender kicked away a try by Hoersten; at 23:37, when Koch got loose but missed wide right from 15 yards; and at 21:53, when Koch’s blast from the right wing was deflected by a defender to the keeper.
At 17:50, Saine, with the keeper out to cut off the angle, missed just wide right from 10 yards.
Ottoville got on the board at 8:02. Lynn Beining fed Koch for a shot in the center; her 12-yarder found the left side of the twine for a 3-1 deficit.
The Jays got that right back at 3:43. Senior Katie Neumeier made a long run down the middle of the field; when no defender stepped up to stop her, she lofted one from 30 yards that handcuffed Kimmet and found the left side for the final tally.
“It was nice to see some scoring from other girls and taking those shots,” Hoersten added. “We know Tori will get marked; even though she isn’t scoring, she’s setting up others with good passes while still drawing attention.”
Ottoville visits Fort Jennings at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The Jays open Division II tourney play at 7 p.m. Monday versus LCC at Bath High School.
