Jays fall to Wildcats
in volleyball
DELPHOS — St. John’s head volleyball coach Kaila Cook wants consistency out of her team.
She didn’t get it and it cost the Lady Blue Jays Thursday night, falling 25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 25-17 in Midwest Athletic Conference action at Robert A. Arnzen Gymnasium.
The match had originally been announced for a Minster home date.
“We should not be battling inconsistency this late in the season with seven seniors. Half of them have been on varsity for three years,” Cook explained. “I am not happy with that. When the pressure’s on, we are not coming up with the hits and passes we should be. We have to eliminate the mistakes.”
All was not bad for the Jays (5-3, 1-2 MAC) this night.
“Our  blocking was very good. We had a lot of blocks and a lot of good touches,” Cook added. “Minster’s defense was awesome, too. Our defense was good. Out setting was good, despite the bad passing; we were getting the ball to our hitters in good spots. It’s just that when we needed to get the point, we didn’t.”
The junior varsity (6-2, 1-2 MAC) was victorious, outlasting the Wildcats 25-16, 22-25, 25-21.
Lady Jeffcats get
first soccer win of 2008
BOTKINS — Jefferson’s girls soccer unit got its first win of the 2008 season, besting host Botkins 3-1 Thursday night.
“We played hard and the girls came out ready. We still played from behind but we more than made up for the goal this time,” Jefferson coach Sara Stearns observed. “Our girls just kept pushing both offensively and defensively. This is a good start for the second half of the season. We hope to put together a string of five or six in a row.”
Jefferson (1-5) got its markers from freshman Elizabeth Schosker (a pair of goals) and junior Megan Moreo.
Botkins got its lone tally from Brooke McGowan.
Jessica Bland had 10 saves for the Red and Black and Steffani Hoelscher 17 for Botkins.
The first half started with a bang with a handball in the box against Delphos at the 6-minute mark. The sophomore McGowan stepped up and put the PK past Bland for a 1-0 lead.
A penalty kick was returned to Delphos when Hoelscher was called for a takedown in her own box on Jeanie Ross. Moreo stepped up but could not get it past the Botkins keeper.
Jefferson kept the pressure up, enabling them to capitalize on a cross from Moreo to Schosker who put it into the back of the net for the tie at the 26-minute mark.
Schosker struck again at the 19-minute mark on a cross from Moreo for the go-ahead goal.
Moreo was able to get one of her own with a strike in the upper right-hand corner of the goal with nine minutes left in the first half.
The second half started pretty quiet with both teams trying to regain momentum. Neither could get on the board in the second half.
“We played hard and never gave up. We just didn’t have the gas to go tonight,” Botkins coach Mike Foor said.
Jefferson hosts Ada Wednesday (5 p.m.).
