Lady Cats get out the broom vs Lancers

The Delphos Herald

MIDDLE POINT — Volleyball is a game of spurts.
Jefferson put together a number of those needed spurts Thursday night in its Northwest Conference matchup at Lincolnview.
They helped inaugurate the new “Lancerdome” with an emphatic 25-22, 25-19, 25-15 sweep of the Lady Lancers.
Jefferson (7-1, 1-1 NWC) head coach Diane Wilson was pleased her team put together those runs in helping get back on the winning track.
“We did have some big rallies and it was nice, because we needed this game to get a little confidence back,” Wilson said. “We played LCC on Tuesday and that wasn’t one of our better games. We were looking to get back on that winning track and I thought the girls played hard.”
The two squads battled on even terms during the first game.  Jefferson’s biggest lead was at 23-18 before the home team fought back and got within 24-22. The Lancers could not get any closer as on the next point, a Bridget Culp (16 kills, 6 digs) kill put an end to the opener.
In Game 2, the teams again were even for the first 12 volleys as they stood at 6-6. Then came one spurt — a 4-0 run — that put the Red and Black with a 10-6 advantage. Two more of those runs put the visitors up 16-9. Smelling the end of game 2, the Wildcats ate up the points in bunches. A late rally by Lincolnview brought the Lancers closer but the Wildcats held on for the 25-19 victory.
“We just aren’t able, at this point, to be able to gain the momentum and keep the momentum,” Lincolnview coach Rhonda Dannenfelser said. “And it’s been a problem that we’ve struggled with this whole season. We talked about trying to find ways to break another team’s momentum and get ourselves back into a game. We haven’t quite figured out how to do that just yet.”
Game 3 began as the first two did: an even battle, at least for the first 14 points. Tied at 7, the Wildcats ran off six straight points to take a 13-7 lead. They went on to take the game 25-15.
On  the  Jeffcat  side  of  the court, Mallorie Wilson connected for eight kills, 12 blocks, four digs and was a perfect 13-of-13 serving. Other  key  contributers  for the Wildcats included Jenna Miller  (4 blocks,  7 digs,  11-of-12 serving) and Stacey Blockberger (9 blocks).
Leading the way for Lincolnview was Stacy Giessler, who was 33-of-43 hitting with 11 kills. She also went 10-for-10 from the service line, recording two aces, and 13 digs. Paige McClure was 13-of-13 serving with three aces and 71-of-71 setting with nine assists. Ayla Eley had seven blocks; Trista Parsons was 11-of-11 hitting with three kills; and Calista Dowdy led the Lancers in digs with 15 and Emily Osting had eight.
Both teams are back in action Monday: Jefferson at Continental and Lincolnview at Parkway.
Jefferson (5-5, 1-1 NWC) took the JV match as well 25-8, 25-11 over the Lancers (1-4, 0-2 in NWC).
