Elida school buys land

Staff reports

ELIDA — The Elida School Board officially put its stamp on the purchase of land near the existing school campus for the new school building Thursday morning.
The school had attempted to buy the property several years ago but it was not available at that time.
Superintendent Don Diglia is pleased. He said by keeping the school inside the village, the school would save money on water and the village would retain its customer.
“There are so many positives. This site makes the high school a centerpiece for the community and there is a lot of potential for developing partnerships with the village. It will save money because we can tie into the village’s sewer and water system, which will cost $1,200. At the other site, we would have had to tie into the county and that would cost $70,000,” he said.
Diglia said the cost of the two fields near Sunnydale Avenue is $914,780 and that of the other site is $817,000. He said the district can offset the difference by selling land from the site near the elementary.
He also said other advantages include the possibility of partnering with the village in the future to extend East North Street, which is where the current high school sits.
In other business, the school board hired a new elementary principle.
Bruce Sommers will be taking the helm over more than 900 students and 80-plus staff and administration.
Sommers retired from Delphos City Schools after 35 years in 2007. He spent the past year as part-time director of the Allen County Alternative School program.
“When Mr. Diglia called me about the position it took me by surprise. But the more my wife, Elaine, and I talked about it, it started to make sense. I began my career as an elementary teacher and then elementary principal and now I can end it that way as well,” Sommers said this morning.
Sommers is spending his first day at Elida today.
“I have met a lot of the teachers and staff and they have made us feel very welcome and I am looking forward to working in an excellent school with a very supportive staff much like I enjoyed in Delphos,” Sommers said.
First on his plate will be filling two teacher positions.
