Delphos City Schools, DEA have tentative 3-year contract

DELPHOS — The Delphos City School Board and members of the Delphos Education Association reached a tentative 3-year contract Monday evening.
Board members voted unanimously to approve the contract which runs from July 1, 2008, through June 30, 2011, and gives teachers a 2.5 percent raise the first year; a 2.25 percent raise the second; and a 2 percent raise the third.
Teachers will also pick up approximately 2.5 percent of their monthly insurance costs, of which the district had been paying 100 percent.
Teachers will also receive a $200-per-year stipend to cover some of the cost of licensure, professional development, etc.
Superintendent Jeff Price is pleased to have the contract in place.
“I didn’t anticipate any major problems with the contract. The staff understands the district’s financial position,” he said.
The negotiation process included four sessions in which teachers representing the DEA, board members and the superintendent met to discuss a variety of issues dealing with working conditions and staff compensation.
All agreed the focus was on furthering the educational process for the students in the district.
Price also gave an update on the progress at Franklin Elementary. The south side of the wing is done with the north side underway. Masonry work is being done to return the wing back to its original state.
“We are on schedule and hopefully, with no rain, we can continue. I know the custodian, Mr. Ricker, is anxious to get into those rooms affected and start cleaning and there will be some remodeling in those classrooms as well,” Price said. “We have about six weeks until the start of school, so we are doing well.”
The district found structural damage to a wing of its Franklin building on May 8. The students were evacuated for the remainder of the 2007-08 school year. The Board of Education on June 9 voted to declare the renovation of that wing an “urgent necessity,” thus bypassing the normal time frame of the bid process in ORC 3313.46 in an attempt to expedite the renovation for the beginning of the 2008-09 school year.
New board policies were approved, including: Use of Board-owned Laptop Computers; and Use of the Network and Board-owned Computers at School. The board updated policies, including additional language: Nondiscrimination, Co-curricular and Extracurricular, Equal Educational Opportunities, Human Relations Education and Equal Opportunity Employment. Members approved changes in the policies for Equal Opportunity Employment; as well as changes and additions to Use of School-Owned Vehicles, Telephone Services and the Acceptable use of Computer and On-line Services.
The district will need to fill two cafeteria positions for the upcoming school year. Part-time cook Sherry Burgei and Franklin Elementary cashier Joan Allemeier issued their resignation letters.

In other business, the board:
• Approved Christine Wisher and Billie Bardo as bus aides for the 2008-09 school year;
• Accepted the resignation of Jon Kroeger as junior high football coach and approved a supplemental contract for him as head freshmen football coach;
• Approved the resignation of Vera White as National Honor Society advisor; and
• Issued supplemental contracts to Dave Hoffman; athletic director; Brett Halsey, junior high football coach; and Christine Siebeneck, National Honor Society advisor.
The next meeting will begin at 8 p.m. Aug. 11.
