Ottoville board OKs income tax levy
CLOVERDALE — Ottoville Schools Board of Education members approved the second resolution needed to place a .75 percent continuous income tax on the Nov. 4 ballot at its rescheduled meeting at St. Barbara Parish Hall on Monday.
The first resolution was passed in a special session on June 25.
The board earlier agreed to pursue the income tax at May’s meeting after reviewing the district’s 5-year forecast with a projected ending cash balance of negative $1,605,147 on June 30, 2012.
Ottoville is the only school in Putnam County without an income tax on the books. The district has not received new operating money since 1988.
The income tax, if passed, will generate approximately $492,000 per year.
The school district will be welcoming at least 24 open-enrollment students for the 2008-09 school year. Students hail from surrounding districts including Continental, Fort Jennings, Kalida, Lincolnview and Wayne Trace.
Board President Kevin Landin noted that as many students from Ottoville will open-enroll at other districts.
Kyle Kumfer from Portage was granted a one-year limited teaching contract for business/computers. Kumfer is already training at the University of Findlay because the class is one of several at Ottoville that now allow students to receive dual credits — credits at Ottoville and college credits.
Kumfer has a master’s degree and was a computer instructor at BGSU.
More than a dozen students in grades K-3 will attend the district’s elementary Summer Intervention Program the weeks of Aug. 4 and 15. Jodi Koester, Connie Rhodes, Judy Bosch and Darlene Hanneman were approved as teachers for the program.
Ticket prices for all high school athletic contests were set at $6 for adults and $4 for students as adopted by the Putnam County League. Season ticket prices will be presented to the board in August.
Big Green athletes will see a few changes to the Athletic Training Rules in the upcoming school year. Tobacco was added to the list of banned substances and 1/2-days are now 5 periods of attendance instead of 4.
In other business, the board:
• Approved the computer services agreement between the district at Northwest Ohio Area Computer Services Cooperative for $7,480 for July 1, 2008, through June 30, 2009;
• Approved membership in the Ohio Coalition for Equity and Adequacy of School Funding for $265;
• Increased Kathy Heitmeyer’s contract from 200 days to 207 days for increased duties associated with Superintendent Scott Mangas;
• Accepted the resignation of junior high boys track coach Matt Eickholt; and
• Issued Aubrey Elston a one-year non-teaching supplemental contract as junior varsity volleyball coach for the 2008 season.
The next meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18 in the board room at the high school.
