Jennings sewer project heads to engineer
FORT JENNINGS — A storm sewer relief project for Fort Jennings Village will head to Poggemeyer Design for engineering and bid sheet preparation for when the grant is received in September.
The village received an approximate $23,000 Small Governments Grant to help with a storm sewer relief project on Fifth Street.
A new 36-inch line at the detention pond at Jennings Schools will come behind the homes on Fourth Street down to St. Joseph Street, turn at Charles Street and turn at Fifth Street and then run out to the river.
Smith and the council members reviewed the detention pond and how it was supposed to work at last September’s meeting; they discovered that instead of retaining water until it was full and then releasing it into the village’s system, the pond water goes directly into the village system until it backs up, then goes into the pond.
Poggemeyer will decide if the new line can run in addition to the existing one for added drainage or if it will need to replace the existing line.
“Either way, this will be a huge deal for the village if we ever need to add things in the future,” Smith said. “The upgraded system will be able to take it.”
Council passed the 2009 budget which includes a beginning balance of $496,509.81 with revenue of $179,946.78 and expenditures of $263,720.05 for an ending balance of $412,736.54.
Nearly 20 village residents will receive a letter regarding existing sidewalks that need repair or the installation of new sidewalks in the coming month. Once the letters are received, residents have 90 days to respond with a plan.
These are the final sidewalks to be addressed in a village-wide effort to provide walkways on most streets.
Members agreed to close First Street for the annual St. Joseph Parish Festival in August.
The next meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. July 15.
