Leininger, Osting punch tickets to Columbus

DAYTON — Tuesday’s Division III regional preliminaries at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium started off more than a bit wet as a storm passed through the Dayton area at the beginning.
For St. John’s junior Jay Leininger and Jefferson 11th-grader Sean Osting, it ended up being a pretty good day despite the weather.
In the boys pole vault finals, Leininger ended up capturing the title with a vault of 13-8, while Osting finished fourth in the boys discus with a 140-11 toss.
That earned them a berth in next Friday and Saturday’s Division III State Track and Field Championships at Jesse Owens Stadium.
Leininger originally thought he had finished second to Waynesfield-Goshen’s Gray Horn.
“There is no shame to lose to a guy like him,” he acknowledged.
Only later on did he find out he had won the event. Horn kept jumping, even trying a 14-8 leap before calling it quits.
“I like to jump in colder weather. I know most don’t but cold doesn’t bother me,” Leininger noted.
The weather not only included wet, blustery and chilly conditions but also a stiff breeze that generally faced the jumpers.
“Wind is so tough to jump in. You have to make adjustments every time, like where the landing point of your pole is,” he said.
Leininger credits speed as the main way he can compensate for his 5-5, 130-pound frame.
“Most guys are a lot bigger than I am,” he added. “However, if you don’t have enough speed, you won’t get over the bar.
“For next week, I just have to keep practicing and getting the technique down even better.”
For Osting, technique helped him overcome the slippery conditions at the start.
“My technique is so much better than it was last year. Our throwing coach, Doug Sanders, really worked with me on that and it’s paying off,” he acknowledged.
He needed it as his first three throws were tentative due to the slippery disc.
“The circle was OK; I just couldn’t keep a grip on the disc. You really had to keep it dry,” he noted.
He got into the finals with a throw of 129 feet and then he could relax some. Still, even when he launched his 140-11 effort, he still had to wait.
“My goal has been to go to state; I really wanted that,” he added. “It also started to dry a little bit and go for it.
“Still, it’s tough to wait and see. I needed a couple guys behind me not to throw 141. One did but not the other.”
That put him on to Columbus.
St. John’s freshman Tiffany Geise (sixth) did not advance to state in the girls high jump.
Those advancing to Saturday’s finals were Jefferson junior Tim Sanders in both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediates, as well as part of the boys 4×200-meter relay (along with senior Michael Wiltsie, junior Kyle Richards and senior Jordan Allenbaugh); St. John’s junior Cameron Hermiller in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and as the anchor of the 4×100 relay (senior Tony Reindel, junior Collin Etzkorn and Leininger); St. John’s junior Lindsey Looser in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, plus as leadoff of the 4×100-meter relay (seniors Lauren Burgei and Dana Martin and sophomore Allison Reindel); Jefferson’s girls quartet of sophomore Tiffany Semrock and freshmen Morgan Fischbach, Emily Fought and Bridget Culp in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays; Reindel in the 100-meters; and the Blue Jay boys 4×4 of sophomore Scott Recker, Etzkorn, senior Justin Shrider and junior Aaron Hackworth.
Those that did not advance to Saturday’s finals were the Jefferson 4×100 of Sanders, Wiltsie, Short and Allenbaugh; Allenbaugh in the 200 meters; Culp in the 100; Jefferson sophomore Kayla Mullenhour (300-meter girls hurdles); the St. John’s girls 4×800-meter relay of seniors Erin Calvelage and Emily Schwieterman, junior Katie Neumeier and freshman Cassie Schimmoeller; and the Lady Jays’ 4×2 relay (disqualified).
Those whose events waited until Saturday are: Calvelage (1,600 and 3,200-meter runs); Jefferson sophomore Mallorie Wilson (shot put); and St. John’s senior Katie Grothouse and Jefferson sophomore Stacey Blockberger (pole vault).
