Bases-loaded free pass dooms Big Green
CONVOY — The old baseball adage that “walks will haunt” was never more true than on Friday night when the Ottoville Big Green took on the Crestview Knights in Division IV baseball tournament action.
The game had a little bit of everything: from the first batter for both teams getting hit by the first pitch thrown to them; to extra innings; to the finale of the winning run being walked home.
Crestview loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th. With two outs and a 3-2 count, Ian Zollars drew a base-on-balls to bring home the winning run and give the Knights a 3-2 victory.
Ottoville starting pitcher Colby Basinger went the distance, pitching well over 100 pitches and had a no-hitter until the fourth inning.
Tony Springer provided the offensive power for the hosts, going 3-for-4 with three singles, while Ian Clay had the big hit for Crestview — a 2-out double that brought two runs across in the fifth inning.
Ottoville got the scoring started in their half of the first when Basinger singled home David Wurst.
The Big Green would tack on another run in the fourth when Basinger got on base again, this time via an error, and came around to score on a Lee Altenburger single, making it a 2-0 contest.
Crestview got their first hit of the game in the fifth when Jordan Gibson hit a 1-out single, followed by a Tony Springer single. Zollars followed by being hit by a pitch to load the bases. That is when Clay came to the plate and hit a shot into the gap in left field; only a great throw by Jacob Landin kept the bases from being cleared but when all was said and done in the fifth, the game was deadlocked at 2.
Landin kept his heroics going in the sixth, making a Willie Mays-style over-the-shoulder catch off the bat of Briggs Orsbon leading off the frame.
The game ventured on into the 10th when the Knights loaded the bases with none out but Basinger battled back and enticed Jordan Gibson into a 1-2 forceout that was followed by a great catch by Jordan Schimmoeller in right, keeping the bases juiced.
However, Zollars came up the hero.
The Knights advance to take on Fort Recovery at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Coldwater.
