FORT JENNINGS — It was Senior Day at Fort Jennings Village Park as the Musketeers baseball team entertained the Ada Bulldogs in non-league action.
It was also the final varsity baseball game at the park; the Musketeers are scheduled to play at their new facility next season.
The hosts tuned up for their tournament run that will start in Convoy on Saturday by getting on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a run; despite seeing five batters in a row go down on strikes spanning the first two frames, they came away with an 8-3 victory.
Travis Trentman had a stellar game, going 2-for-2 — reaching three times at the plate — and driving in four runs.
Trevor VonSossan had the distinction of starting the last game at the park and pitched four innings of 2-run, 4-hit ball to get the win. Jared Calvelage came on in relief to get the save after a valid attempt on the hill by Derek Geise.
Geise walked two batters and hit one in the fifth before Calvelage came on to get out of the bases-leaded jam unscathed.
The Musketeers put one run on the board in the first on a double by Jared Horstman after Drew Mesker was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Ada took a brief lead with two runs in the top of the fourth when one run was balked in from third base and another scored on a Toby Simmons’ single.
That lead would be short-lived as the hosts put up a 3 spot in their half of the fourth. Matt Krietemeyer (2 walks) led off with a base-on-balls and Josh Calvelage followed by being hit by a pitch. The Ada catcher botched a Giese pop-up in front of the plate, a spectacular heads-up base-running play by Krietemeyer tied the game when he scored all the way from second, head-first sliding into home in front of the attempted tag by the Bulldog catcher.
Trentman brought in two of his game-high four RBIs with a single, scoring Calvelage and Geise, giving the Musketeers a 4-2 lead.
Ada would add one run in the top of the sixth without the benefit of a hit as Jared Calvelage gave up his only run on two walks, a hit batsman and a wild pitch.
Nonetheless, Jennings would explode for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the deal.  The home team sent 10 batters to the plate with Trentman driving in another two on a single. Drew Mesker hit a run-scoring single and Krietemeyer obtained an RBI when he walked with the bases juiced.
Jennings improved its overall record to 8-10 and visits Continental 5 p.m. Friday.
