Wannemacher to celebrate her 90th birthday
Rita Wannemacher of Cloverdale will turn 90 on May 20.
To celebrate, an open house in her honor will be held from 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Barbara’s Parish Hall in Cloverdale. The family asks that gifts be omitted. A family dinner will follow the 4 p.m. Mass at St. Barbara’s.
Rita (Burgei) Wannemacher was born on May 20, 1918, in Cloverdale, to Charles and Veronica (Stretker) Burgei. She was one of nine siblings and has two surviving, including Sr. Ermalinda Burgei of Dayton and Oscar Burgei of Glandorf.
On June 15, 1938, she married Oscar Wannemacher, who died Nov. 20, 1990.
Her five children are Roger (Marilyn) Wannemacher of Cloverdale, Carol (Ken) Shortgen and Helen (Gene) Weis of Ottawa, Diane (Mel) Nienberg of Glandorf and Marita (Mark) Odenweller of Elida. She also has 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Wannemacher has resided in Cloverdale her entire life and is the oldest female native parishioner at St. Barbara’s, where she was active in the Altar-Rosary Society and the Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She was a member of the Cloverdale Garden Club.
She continues to enjoy crocheting, reading, gardening and spending time with her family and is well-known for her baking, especially bread, rolls, pies and cookies.
Her family admires her zest for life, her sense of humor and her desire to remain active.
