Installation of new playground equipment starts Monday
DELPHOS — Site work for new playground equipment will start Monday at Stadium Park adjacent to the Municipal Swimming Pool, nearly 14 months ahead of schedule.
Due to the overwhelming response to the Delphos Kiwanis Club’s fundraising for the project, work at Waterworks Park may also be in the future.
“Businesses and individuals were very generous,” Kiwanis spokesperson Mark Miller said Tuesday. “No one said no. If it’s for kids, everyone is very willing.”
No donation was too small, according to Miller.
“Just to show you how everyone got involved, a little girl, Olivia Tippie, brought in six pennies in one of our donation envelopes to a bank to give to the project. That is indicative of what we’ve seen with this,” he said.
The area east of the pool will be closed during the demolition of the old wooden equipment and slide and then the site prep work will start. Some of the existing equipment will be refurbished and incorporated into the new playground system. A handicapped-accessible ramp and swing will also be installed.
Much of the labor for the project will be donated, saving approximately $24,000.
The entire system will be raised off the ground and padded mulch will be added.
Miller is excited to see the project come to fruition.
“This system will be the first of its kind in the area and the power tower with it will be nearly as tall as the pool slide,” he said. “The Kiwanis have never really taken on a project of this magnitude. We knew the existing set was going to be condemned. It made sense that we jump in and spearhead this project.”
A dedication of the new equipment is planned for May 21, weather permitting.
Money left over will be seed for replacing the playground set at Waterworks Park in the future.
