Darrell R. Honingfort, 55, of Ottawa, died at 8:48 p.m. Monday at Putnam County Ambulatory Care Center, Glandorf.
He was born Oct. 24, 1952, in Lima, to Anthony and Rose (Lammers) Honingfort. They preceded him in death.
On Nov. 27, 1976, he married Leona “Loni” Duling, who survives in Ottawa.
Other survivors include a son, Ryan Honingfort of Ottawa; a daughter, Amy (Kyle) Stechschulte of Ottawa; a brother, Dennis (Patricia) German of Amherst; and three sisters, Deborah (Steven) Schaffner and Darlene (Mike) Osterhage of Ottawa and Diane (Dennis) Beam of Delphos.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Honingfort.
Mr. Honingfort worked in the Ottawa Street Department of 24 years. He also served as a firefighter at the Ottawa Fire Department since November 1972, where he had been a lieutenant, assistant chief, captain and chief and was named State of Ohio Volunteer Firefighter of the Year in 1995. He was also a former Putnam County Sheriff Auxiliary member. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa where he was an usher. He was a 1971 graduate of Ottawa-Glandorf High School and was a member of the Ottawa Eagles, Glandorf Rod and Gun Club, Village of Ottawa Tree Commission. He enjoyed farming and camping and was an avid NASCAR fan. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Rev. Tom Hemm officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Thursday and 2-8 p.m. Friday at Love Funeral Home, Ottawa, where a scripture service will be held at 2:30 p.m. and a firefighter service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday.
