Ottoville to get taser
OTTOVILLE — After a couple months worth of discussion, the village council here put the issue of purchasing a taser for the police department to a vote Monday night. Because the elected members total an even six and there was a tie, the decision was made by Mayor Ron Miller. He voted to make the purchase.
“I have a son who is an officer and I know I would rather he have one. I would rather he pull a taser than his gun,” he said.
Those members who voted against the measure had concerns over liability possibilities if the weapon is ever used but similar issues are always possible whether a night stick or flashlight is used, not to mention a firearm. The mayor said half of the other county municipalities have a taser and they are rarely used but are liked by those who have them.
In other business, the process has begun for the fire department to get additional firefighting gear. A Federal Emergency Management Agency grant is expected to pay for materials. The total is approximately $120,000.
State Route 224 will be repaved by the Ohio Department of Transportation this summer. Alleys with approaches to the roadway will be replaced. Affected businesses will be notified in writing when the work is to be performed. Council passed a measure to approve the $12,600 work by Bluffton Paving from Third Street to the state highway.
Discussion also began to purchase a camera that can be dropped into sewers to inspect drainage problems in the future. This will save money as an alternative to digging prior to making repairs. A committee was formed and further research will be conducted into the matter.
Council entered executive session after the meeting and no action was taken.
