DELPHOS — School board members worked ahead Monday evening and approved supplemental contracts for the 2008-09 school year.
Dave Hoffman will serve as head girls basketball coach; Jamie Lewis will be the varsity assistant coach; and Jeff Rex was approved for head wrestling coach.
Marc Smith will return as head boys basketball coach; Mark Jettinghoff as varsity assistant basketball coach; and Cassie Lindeman will serve as head varsity basketball cheerleading coach.
Other contracts were approved and include a continuing contract to Laura Osborn. Osborn has completed an additional 30 semester hours of coursework in a field related to her teaching assignment in addition to her receiving a master’s degree in the art of teaching from Marygrove College. Osborn teaches seventh-grade reading and English at Jefferson Middle School.
Scott Elwer was approved as the adult education instructor for 2007-08. His pay for this is drawn from vocational resources provided by the State of Ohio.
Certificated contracts were renewed for the following: Doug Sanders, 3 year; Amie Buettner, 3 year; Chad Brinkman, 3 year; Vera White, 1 year; Troy Montenery, 3 year; Kathy Buettner, 3 year; Judy Bevington, 3 year; Marie Groch, 3 year; Chris Sommers, 3 year; Lucy Bambauer, 3 year; Theresa Anderson, 3 year; Jeff Hunt, 2 year; Michelle Kroeger, 2 year; Tamara Wirth, 2 year; and Lori Hicks, 1 year.
Non-certificated contracts were approved for: Brenda McKee, cafeteria manger, 5 year; and Aaron Elwer, truancy officer, 2 year.
A 1-year, limited contact was also approved for Stacy Roethlisberger as middle school intervention specialist/teacher. Roethlisberger had been employed with the Franklin County Educational Service Center as an intervention teacher.
The board also created a library aide position that will be posted in-house first. The posting does not require certification.
The district will be posting bid sheets for two 84-passenger school buses for the district. Superintendent Jeff Price estimates the cost of a school bus at $75,000 to $80,000. The school received $11,550 from state funding that can be used toward these purchases. The remainder of the cost will come from the Permanent Improvement Fund.
Allen County Educational Service Center Superintendent Brian Rockhold sat in on the meeting. Rockhold said he likes to visit a board meeting in each district about every two years to see how everyone is doing and ask if they need any assistance.
The center provides schools with services such as occupational therapy, school psychology, preschool for disabled students, quiz bowl contests and bus driver training.
Rockhold said about 30 percent of the 108 center employees provide direct service to the school districts. Service contractors can work daily, weekly, bi-weekly and even monthly as needed.
The board is also keeping an eye on gas prices and expenses to the district. The Finance Committee met last week and learned that fuel costs to the district are hefty. In 2005, the district spent $34,000 on fuel; $54,000 in 2006 and $47,000 in 2007. So for this year, the cost has been $40,000 and on track to hit $54,000.
The Buildings and Grounds Committee reported work is being completed to bring the school into compliance with Jared’s Law, including installing fireproof cabinets for combustible materials and modifications to bleachers at Jefferson Middle School. The funds for these projects will come from the Permanent Improvement Fund.
Price added that the kindergarten number is at 62 for the upcoming school year.
Prior to the May 12 meeting, a public hearing will be held prior to the board’s approval of hiring retiring Athletic Director Dave Hoffman as part-time athletic director for the 2008-09 school year.
In other business, the board:
• Approved Treasurer Brad Rostorfer to seek bids for the purchase of liability, building and contents and bus fleet insurance;
• Approved membership for students in grades 7-12 in the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) for the 2008-09 school year;
• Approved the contract for purchased services agreement with the Allen County Educational Service Center; and
• Accepting the resignation of kindergarten teacher Kristy Sehlhorst at the conclusion of this school year.
