Bulldogs down Lady Green in PCL action
COLUMBUS GROVE — The Columbus Grove Lady Bulldogs got a stellar pitching performance from Heather Bartz Tuesday afternoon.
The hurler struck out 10 batters, while Kristy Birkemeier had a 2-for-3 afternoon at the plate with a double and a triple, as the Bulldogs moved to 2-0 in their 7-3 victory over Putnam County League rival Ottoville in fast-pitch softball action.
Sami Modica had the lone extra base hit for the guests (1-1, 0-1 PCL), knocking a double in the second inning. It scored Adria Wannemacher for the first run of the game.
However, Grove would strike back in its half of the second courtesy of two Ottoville errors sandwiched in between a Jody Birkemeier walk and a K. Birkemeier 2-bagger. That gave the home team a 4-1 advantage and they never looked back.
Grove (2-0, 1-0 PCL) would add three more runs in the third frame. Paige Gerdeman led off with a triple and scored on a K. Birkemeier 3-bagger. She scored a batter later when Brianne Schroeder tripled her home. Lisa Karhoff added the third run of the inning a batter later on a sacrifice fly to right, giving the Bulldogs a commanding 7-1 lead.
However, that would end the scoring for the home team as the guests attempted a comeback.
Ottoville scored two runs in the fourth as Brooke Koester led off with a single and scored when Amy Hohlbein reached on an error. Hohlbein later scored when Wannemacher lined a single up the middle to make it a 7-3 count.
Modica settled down for the Lady Green from the center circle as she retired nine of the next 10 batters she faced.
Bartz countered her opposite number in the next three innings, not allowing a run and just two more hits to send their PCL foe to their first loss of the season.
Ottoville hits the road tonight as the Lady Green invades Shawnee.
Grove is also on the road in its next encounter: Thursday versus Paulding in NWC action.
