Jeffcats roll in baseball opener
The Delphos Herald
DELPHOS — Jefferson was expecting to open the 2008 baseball season on the road at Kalida Monday night.
Instead, it got moved to Wildcat Field in Delphos due to wet grounds at Holy Name Field in Kalida.
No matter. The experienced Jeffcats compiled 12 hits and pounded the visiting Wildcats 9-4 in non-conference action.
“It was a nice start to the season. It was pretty chaotic deciding where we were going to play the game but it was a good opener for us,” Jefferson coach Troy Montenery explained.
Junior Sean Fisher (1-0) went 4 2/3 innings for the home team, giving up four hits and four earned runs. He fanned five and walked one. Senior southpaw Damon Joseph relieved him with one out in the fifth and gave up one hit in 2 1/3 innings.
“Sean did a nice job keeping the ball down. He got into a little trouble in the fifth and Damon came in and got us out of trouble,” Montenery said.
Joseph went 2-for-4 (2 runs) and Fisher 3-for-4 (3 steals) as the first two batters in the lineup. Junior Aaron Schuerman (3 steals) went 2-for-4 (3 runs scored) in the fifth spot.
A 5 spot in the second frame got the Jeffcats rolling.
“I was pleased with our hitting and base-running. We had six stolen bases; we had a total of 24 last year, so that’s a sign of improvement in that area,” the coach continued.
Montenery also pointed to one error on the defensive side as a strong positive for the opener.
“We’re like everyone else this spring; we’ve only been on the field four or five times,” he added. “All things considered, for us to have only one error, I’m pretty happy. It was just a nice all-around game.”
Jefferson is back in action Thursday (4:30 p.m.) as they take on St. John’s at Wildcat Field.
Kalida is at Miller City Monday.
