Teams rally for Relay

Amy Mox with Curves brought Easter baskets that members had made for their team fundraising event.DELPHOS — The Relay for Life held a rally open house Tuesday evening at St. Peter Lutheran Church where teams had their fundraising events available to the public.
Everything from candy, candles, crafts and a lemonade stand enticed family and friends of cancer survivors to make a purchase to support hope for a cure for cancer.
To give a perspective on where funds raised are directed: $120 provides researchers with a case of 144 petri dishes, $250 provides 83 hours of toll-free access for the American Cancer Society’s National Cancer Information Center and $1,000 provides expenses for a patient to stay for free during cancer treatment in one of the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge facilities.
The local Relay for Life committee is gearing up for this year’s event, which will kick off at the Delphos Jefferson Track at 5:45 p.m. June 13 and end at noon June 14. The opening event will be the Survivor Lap, which is open to all cancer survivors. The Luminaria Ceremony will be at 9:30 p.m. Friday with the lighting of candles in honor and memory of those touched by cancer.
Other Friday night events will be the Mr. and Ms. Relay Contest at 6:45 p.m. and the container auction at 7 p.m. Food, food and more food will be available both days, including everything from homemade ice cream, waffles and sandwiches. Plenty of games are scheduled for all ages, including Fear Factor Challenge, Frozen Chicken Bowling and Scrabble laps.
Saturday morning will see a new event, with booths having garage sales from 8-11 a.m. Closing ceremonies will begin at 11:30 a.m.
For those who would like to participate but are not part of a team, they can contact any committee member or attend the next meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 8 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 422 N. Pierce St., Delphos.
