ELIDA — It was a tale of two halves at the Elida Fieldhouse Friday night, as the Wayne Trace Raiders and Kalida Wildcats battled for the Division IV championship. The first half ended in a tie after two quarters of closely-fought action. But the second half ended much differently, as the Raiders dominated en route to a 20-point victory over Kalida, 56-36.
Ryan Kleman kicked off the scoring with a jumper from the top of the key to give Kalida the early 2-0 lead. Kieman followed that with a lay-up, and teammate Justin Kahle added his own lay-in to give the Wildcats a 6-1 lead with 5:52 to play in the period.
That’s when Wayne Trace’s Dane Treece (20 points) started to come alive, as he hit two consecutive three’s to give the Raiders a 9-6 lead with 3:10 to play. Kalida’s Matt Warnecke drained a three at the buzzer to send the Wildcats into the second period with a 10-9 lead.
The second quarter started with the two squads trading buckets in the post. First it was Kalida’s Scott Schnipke with a pump-fake and shot that gave the Wildcats a 12-9 lead. His teammate Jordan Basinger also pitched in down low, hitting a reverse lay-up and a turn-around jumper to give Kalida a 18-13 lead with 4:25 to play in the half.
The Raiders Alex Labounty personally put a halt to Kalida’s momentum, as he scored 6 straight points to give Wayne Trace a 19-18 lead with 3:02 to play. After a trey by teammate Aaron Hockenberry, Wayne Trace had a 22-20 lead. Kalida’s Kahle answered with two free throws to knot the score at 22-22 heading into the half.
The third quarter proved to be a huge shift, as the Raiders tripled the Wildcats point total for the period, outscoring them 18-6. The Raiders’ Treece and teammate Riley Linder dominated the period, as each hit jumpers and three-pointers to help build a solid lead for Wayne Trace.
Kalida faced full-court pressure the entire period and it seemed to slow down their offense. The team didn’t get many looks at the basket and when they did, they were contested.
The fourth period was more of the same for Kalida, as Wayne Trace’s Treece hit a jumper to give his team a 42-28 lead. Moments later the Raiders’ Hockenberry completed a nice look inside to Labounty for the lay-in, which gave Wayne Trace a 53-30 lead with 4:13 to play.
Treece led all scorers with 20, followed by teammates Linder and Labounty with 10 each. For Kalida, Kahle had 9, Basinger scored 8, and Kieman scored 7. Kalida had 13 turnovers to Wayne Trace’s 11. Wayne Trace dominated in the assist category, with 19 to Kalida’s 10. Wayne trace also won in the rebound category, 37-27.
