Wildcat balance too much for Grove
BLUFFTON — It may have been a duel of Putnam County League foes on Tuesday night at Bluffton High School but it was a win-or-go-home contest as the boys Division IV sectional basketball tournament tipped off.
The Kalida Wildcats were pitted against their PCL nemesis, the Columbus Grove Bulldogs, and eliminated them 63-47.
The ‘Cats put four players in double figures, led by Jordan Basinger, who tallied 20 markers. Scott Schnipke added 15 and Matt Warnecke and Justin Kahle added 12 and 10, respectively.
The Wildcats move on to face the Pandora-Gilboa Rockets at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
Columbus Grove put three players in double digits with Luke Kohls leading its scorers with 13 points. Colby Mueleman added 12 and Adam Osterhage contributed 10 to the effort.
Kalida established the pace and the lead early, taking a 19-10 advantage before the ’Dogs made a run, cutting the lead down to 19-16. Basinger and Schnipke combined for two consecutive steals and conversions at the other end of the court to break the string.
The Wildcats held their opponent to as many points in the first half as they had scored in the first quarter and led at the break 28-19.
Grove was limited to just six baskets from the field in the middle quarters before tallying 20 points in the final canto but Basinger sank eight of his 20 points in the fourth, hitting 4-of-7 from the foul line to aid in the ’Cats (15-5) pulling away for the win.
Grove ends 6-15.
