This and That

History at St. John's

We’re all familiar with the school science fairs. Nearly every school has them and I enjoy going to them when my grandchildren have a project to show. It makes grandma especially proud when one of the family gets a superior at state.
Also, I wish I could remember all the material I typed for my own kids back in the old days before there were computers for them to use, I surely would be smart by now.
Every school has a science fair but Andy Miller, an eighth-grade history teacher at St. John’s Elementary decided to try something new — a history fair. It turned out to be a huge success. The event was held in the little theatre last Thursday.
The 2008 theme was “Conflict, Compromise and Historical Events.” Topics chosen by the students were, “Women Nurses in the Vietnam War,” “The Battle of Concord and Lexington,” “Treaty of Paris 1783,” “What Women Did During World War II,” “Declaration of Independence,” “Desert Storm,” “Civil Rights,” “WAACS,” “Rosa Parks,” “Compromise of 1850,” “The Battle of Normandy D-Day,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Boston Tea Party,” “Civil War Uniforms,” “Vietnam War,” “Native Americans,” “Gettysburg,” “Women’s Rights,” “Battle of Yorktown,” “Fort Jennings in the War of 1812,” “The Brave Journey of Deborah Sampson,” “Clean Air Act,” “Crusades,” “Bunker Hill,” “Navajo Code Talkers” and “Children of the Great Depression.”
Some students worked in groups while others entered individually.
Individuals receiving superior ratings were, Molly Scalf, Nicole Winover, Kaitlin Wrasman  and  Andrew  Etgen.  Groups  receiving superior  ratings  were,  Bruce Schultz,  Josh  Rode,  Matthew Warnecke,  Isaac  Klausing and Austin Jostpille; Ryan Smith, Caleb Smith, Zach Burnett and Kyle Klausing; and  Rachel  Miller,  Jenna Reel, Kaiti Myers; and Chelsea Wellmann and Jensi Utrup.
These projects can compete in the district fair on March 15 in Toledo.
Judges were Linda Guthrie, Sister Tina, Jim Krumel, Sue May, Theresa Kemmann, Mike Miller, Lou Hohman and myself.
I was privileged to be one of the judges and found it quite interesting and informative. Good job kids. Good luck to all those who will participate on the district level and congratulations to your teachers, as well.
