No winter blahs here

February’s here and exciting activities continue at Vantage Career Center. Students throughout the building have started preparing and competing in local skills contests. On Jan. 28, students in the Vantage Business Professionals of America chapter traveled to Apollo Career Center to participate in the Region 16 competitions. Trade and Industrial students also held their SkillsUSA local contests at Vantage. Students are awaiting their results. A list of students who will advance to the next level of competition will be included in a future Vantage article.
Step Into Your Future is a workshop for 7th and 8th grade girls held at Vantage on Jan. 26th. Nearly 40 students and their parents explored non-traditional careers for women including welding, electricity, carpentry and network systems. Students had an opportunity to weld metal pieces together to make a swan, build a wooden step stool, solder together a flashing LED kit and tear apart a computer and put it back together again. It was a fast-paced morning for students to learn a few new skills.
The Korea War Veterans Association, Indiana Chapter One visited Vantage for a special assembly on Jan. 29th. Through their Tell America program, these gentlemen shared their personal stories from the war. It was an interesting and exceptional presentation.
Sophomores from the 13 schools Vantage serves will have the opportunity to visit two Vantage programs on Feb. 5 during Sophomore Visitation Day.
Last but not least, the annual Vantage Open House and Scholarship Dinner will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 All 18 and the career technical labs will be open.  Attendees can meet the teachers and see the different career-technical programs available to high school students. Adult Education representatives will also be available to answer questions about adult education classes or Wright State University courses. A catered chicken dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. and adults dinners will cost $6.50.  Kids can have a special hot dog and macaroni and cheese dinner for just $2.
