Library seeks renewed support

Jane Sadler, left, and Library Director Nancy Mericle go over paperwork containing past history of the library and the services it has offered since the renewal levy was first passed in 1978.DELPHOS — The Delphos Public Library offers many services besides just books. Movies are available for rent, computers available for the public’s use and children’s reading programs are just a few of the services tax dollars make available.
The March 4 ballot will contain the renewal levy for voters in the Delphos School District in both Allen and Van Wert counties. Library Director Nancy Mericle points out this is a renewal levy for a five-year period, which has been in place since 1978.
“For a homeowner of a $100,000 residence, this is only $6 a year. It generates $54,424 which goes into the library’s general fund. Without these moneys, we’d have to make fewer purchases, cut staff and programs and reduce hours,” she said.
With announced budget cuts by the state, passage of the levy is crucial to maintain current services and maintenance of the building. Mericle said the roof of the main building needs to be replaced in the spring.
The children’s reading program has turned out to be very popular and Mericle said it is nice to see grandparents and fathers bringing the kiddies in regularly for the series. Jane Sadler would also like to see more participants in the adult programs, such as painting classes, arts and crafts, visiting authors and other speakers.
In the last five years, a new addition to the library was completed. It contains a new genealogy room, new restrooms and a reading area. A new circulation desk and new carpeting was installed in the work area. A new children’s librarian’s desk was added. Four extra public computers and two additional PAC machines were installed. New graphic software was added to the automation system.
Mericle also hopes to add a new microfilm printer reader for census, newspaper records in the genealogy room and to update the checkout circulation system.
With all the services offered at the public library, Mericle feels it is a good bargain during these tough economic times and urges the public to vote yes for the renewal levy on the March 4 ballot.
