Blue Jays outduel Lancer boys
DELPHOS — On a cold Saturday night, the Robert A. Arnzen Gymnasium was nice and warm. The boys of Lincolnview came to town to battle off with the boys of St. John’s and the host Blue Jays prevailed 54-41.
The first points of the game were not tallied until 1:47 into the game when Cameron Hermiller (10 points) converted on two foul shots. Shortly after, the Lancers tied it with two Kaleb Baucom (12 points) foul shots. After this, the Jays never looked back, keeping the lead for the rest of the game after putting the ball in the basket. Both defenses had their share of blocked and altered shots in preventing scores (the Jays 4, the Lancers 5) but also committed fouls. Kyle Thatcher (5 points, 5 rebounds) and Ryan Frey (4 points, 8 rebounds) had key blocks to help keep the game close in the first quarter but the Jays led 15-11 as the buzzer sounded.
“We talked about our defense in the morning and they took on the challenge and were able to make it tough for them to do much on offense. We had a little spot in the second quarter where we lost our concentration,” stated Jays coach Aaron Elwer.
The second quarter was once again a tight one as the teams only differed in points scored by one point (St. John’s 14-13). The Lancers got within one several times but could just not pull through and get the lead. Jordan Simpson (12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks) worked inside and out for Lincolnview to keep the Jays on their toes. Eric Buettner (6 points) got open for two 3-pointers for the Jays and Tim Clark (8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks) had a huge block in the second quarter to keep the Lancers behind. The Jays took a 29-24 advantage into the locker room as they got time to get revamped and ready to play another hard half.
“Hand it to Delphos and their defense as they really bothered us on the offensive side. They are a nice team and they cashed in on our mistakes. We got outplayed,” stated Lincolnview coach Mike Elston.
Lincolnview seemed to be a little down after the break as they started to let the Jays pull farther ahead of them. Brandon Hemker (5 points) came off the bench and scored all of his points in the period for the Jays as he found some open areas. Frey had huge rebounds to help the Lancers get some offense started. The third quarter ended with a score of 39-31, Jays.
“The second half, we only allowed five field goals and we did a decent job on the boards. Our offense did a nice job of being patient. The team is getting better as each kid is stepping up the effort,” added Elwer.
Clark and Taylor Bowersock (8 points, 3 rebounds) helped to lead the way for the Jays in the final quarter as they combined for 11 of the team’s 15 points. Clark did a great job on the boards and drove to the basket for three layups. Bowersock, on the other hand, worked the ball around the perimeter and eventually got it back to drain a 3-pointer and also added a pair of foul shots. The Lancers balanced their 10 points pretty evenly between four players as they struggled to handle the ball and get rebounds in the final quarter.
St. John’s (6-9) hosts Coldwater Friday. Lincolnview (4-12) takes on Allen East Friday at Allen East.
In JV action, the Jays conquered the Lancers 46-30. The Blue Jays (11-4) were led in scoring by Tyler Williams with eight points; the Lancers (2-14) received 13 from Jeremy Morris.
