DELPHOS — The Red Devils of Arlington trekked down to Delphos to face the Jefferson Wildcats Saturday night. They came out strong to outscore the Wildcats 58-37 in boys cage action.
The Red Devils outpointed the hosts 16-6 in the first quarter. Jacob Drerup (game-high 31 markers; 8 defensive rebounds) missed only one shot he took in the first in tallying 11. Arlington consistently worked the ball to Drerup as the Wildcats struggled to stop him.
“We got beat by a better team who is outstanding and there was a reason they lost to Liberty-Benton in overtime. Drerup is a fine player and I have a great deal of respect for the program as they are well-coached,” stated Jefferson coach Marc Smith.
Jefferson picked it up some in the second as they tallied 11 to Arlington’s 15. Jordan Jettinghoff had five points from the field for the Wildcats; Mike Rahrig, Matthew Antalis and Matt Gerdeman added two points each. Drerup added six more points; Andrew Steinman added three free throws and Travis Rettig, Kevin Rogers and Paden Morehart added two points apiece as Arlington took a 31-17 lead into the halftime break.
Jefferson shot only 33 percent from the field for the whole game (14-of-43, 1-of-9 treys) as the Red Devils shot 59 percent (18-of-30, 3-of-7 3s). They were also outrebounded 29-17 (3-6 offensive), with Mike Rahrig leading with five.
“We got some good looks but the shots were not falling and our shooting percentage was not very good,” noted Smith.
Arlington came out still playing tough in the third quarter, tallying another 16 points. Jefferson’s Bubba Shivley drove for a traditional 3-point play and Josh Miller battled underneath for a basket. Damin Oman scored all six of his points for the visitors in the period as they went into the fourth quarter with a twenty-one point advantage.
“We got off to a slow start. Arlington is a very fundamental team and makes you do every individual fundamentals from ball fakes to shooting,” added Smith.
Jefferson tallied 11 points to Arlington’s 11 in the final quarter. Michael Wiltsie netted five points for the Wildcats in the quarter.
The Wildcats (8-5) host Bluffton Friday and Ottoville Saturday afternoon for a makeup game. The Red Devils increase to 12-3.
In JV action, Arlington prevailed 48-38. The Red Devils were lead by Brent Williams with 16 points, Jefferson by Jordan Guillen with seven.
