KALIDA — Any time there is a Putnam County League contest, whether it be in soccer, baseball or tiddly winks, it is sure to be anyone’s game.
That was the case on Friday night when the Fort Jennings Musketeers traveled up SR 65 to take on the Kalida Wildcats in boys basketball action.
The ’Cats came into the game 3-4 (0-1 PCL), while their foe was 6-2 (1-0 PCL); however, the hosts didn’t play much like a sub-.500 team and outscored the Musketeers 22-14 in the final frame to come away with an impressive 69-56 victory.
Matt Warnecke led all scorers for Kalida with 19 points; Scott Schnipke and Jordan Basinger added 14 apiece.
The guests had three players of their own with double digits, led by Ross Gerdeman with 18 markers, Derek Geise added 15 and Troy Warnecke put up 12 points, 10 in the first period.
The contest started out as a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to gain a stronghold. Justin Kahle (6 points) gave the hosts a 3-point advantage — 21-18 — with a basket at the buzzer to end the first.
Gerdeman returned the favor late in the second with a jumper from the paint, giving the Musketeers a 34-33 advantage at the break. It appeared as if the guests would be able to pull away as the ’Cats went to the line early but missed their first seven attempts from the stripe.
The Maroon and White held their foe to just four baskets from the field in the third before pulling away in the fourth.
Warnecke hit a clutch 3-pointer with 5:12 to go, giving the home team a 53-44 lead. They ended up hitting 7-of-10 free shots in the final period.
Kalida connected on 25-of-45 from the floor (5-of-10 behind the arc) for 56 percent, as well as 12-of-25 from 15 feet (48%). They took down 33 off the glass (9 offensive) and added 15 turnovers.
The Musketeers finished 24-of-46 shots (3-of-14 long range) for 52 percent and 5-of-11 charity shots (45%). They grabbed 20 off the glass (7 offensive) and turned it over nine times.
Jennings welcomes in Bluffton tonight, as does Kalida with Tinora.
