Lady Green holds on to beat Grove cagers

COLUMBUS GROVE — Saturday afternoon’s hardwood game between the Columbus Grove Lady Bulldogs and the Ottoville Lady Green was a roller-coaster ride.
At the end of the ride was a road victory for the Lady Green as they defeated Columbus Grove 58-45 for a Putnam County League girls victory.
Ottoville got off to a great start in the first quarter, outscoring Columbus Grove 19-10.
In the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs battled back. Genna Carpenter (18 points) contributed nine points and two rebounds in the quarter, allowing Columbus Grove to take a 27-25 lead late in the quarter.
With 15 seconds before halftime, Grove crossed the timeline to try to make one last play but the ball-handler’s feet got ahead of the ball, causing a travel and the turnover. The Lady Green quickly took the ball down the floor to their own basket, allowing Tricia Honigford (17) to sink one from beyond the arc on the right side right before the buzze to get back in front 28-27.
In the third period, the Lady Green once again gained a substantial lead.  Ottoville’s defense limited Carpenter’s impact on the game in the quarter, allowing them to go on short point-runs to push their lead higher. Despite Gina Beining (16 markers, 9 boards) and Brittany Beining (6 rebounds) getting into foul trouble in the quarter, the Lady Green managed to capture a 41-32 lead going into the final quarter of action.
The fourth quarter was another roller-coaster ride for the Lady Green. With a little more than a minute left in the game, Columbus Grove was down just eight and had possession of the ball. Good defense on Ottoville’s part, however, forced a Lady Bulldog turnover, giving the Lady Green possession. The Lady Bulldogs were forced to foul, sending Ottoville to the line for two bonus shots. The Lady Green shot 8-for-12 from the line in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Ottoville canned 19-of-45 overall, 7-of-16 long range, 42% and 13-of-17 free throws (76%). They had 25 boards and a mere two miscues.
Grove downed 16-of-41 overall, 1-of-6 triples, for 39% and 12-of-18 singles (67%). They totaled 16 boards and 18 miscues.
With the win, the Lady Green improves to 9-1 (3-0 PCL), while the Lady Bulldogs fall to 5-3 (1-2).
Ottoville will travel to face another PCL opponent, Continental, Thursday; the Lady Bulldogs host Allen East on the same day.
