See you next year!!
Metcalfe’s Musings
This is my last Metcalfe’s Musings of 2008. Everyone may not weep and gnash their teeth!
I could wax nostalgic about what a great year it’s been, how much fun this column is to write — it sometimes is and sometimes it isn’t so easy — and all that.
There are — as always — some great stories: Michael Phelps cleaning house at the Beijing Olympics; St. John’s winning its fifth state football title; Philadelphia capturing a World Series against a former doormat, Tampa Bay.
Then there are the bad things that maybe get too much focus and attention.
Four coaches from the NFL: Romeo Crennel, Eric Mangini, Rod Marinelli and Mike Shanahan; have already been fired. I’d have to guess they won’t be the only ones after all the smoke clears.
Nice belated Christmas present, ain’t it? Fear not for these men, though, because they will land on their feet somewhere.
For me, it has to be full speed ahead into the New Year 2009. There are the resolutions to make — and break!!! — in our personal and professional lives.
No one really knows what the new year will bring — but it should be fun to find out!
We’ve got things in the economy, the world and everything around us that we all need to keep an eye on but in the end, aren’t sports a needed respite from the pressures of life?
Isn’t it nice to be able to argue the relative merits of taking LaDanian Tomlinson over Larry Johnson in a fantasy draft? Who’s going to win this weekend’s wild card playoffs? Which coach is next going to be fired (aren’t we mean?)? Who’s going to be the surprise team in baseball as spring is just around the corner?
The truest ideals of sports are playing for the pure joy of the game — and making a nice living to boot — doing it in a classy way while giving everything you have and letting your game do the talking? What novel concepts!
Maybe we can even live a little vicariously — and harmlessly — through our favorites.
So, tonight, enjoy yourselves — just not TOO much — with friends and family because it’s a time to remember the good about the past and look forward to the future with hope.
After all, it’s that what a New Year is all about?
Happy New Year, folks.
