ELIDA — Senior Cameron Hermiller went to the line with the St. John’s Blue Jays up by only 1 point, 45-44, over Elida in boys basketball action Tuesday night at the Elida Fieldhouse.
He made both of them, which gave him his 20th and 21st points of the night. That put St. John’s up by three with under 60 ticks on the clock.
Elida then came down the court and gave it to freshman Reggie McAdams (18 points), who made a layup, making it a 1-point game. As both teams failed to score, the Blue Jays grabbed the miss by Elida and threw it downcourt to sophomore Ty Bergfeld, who knocked down a layup to seal a 49-46 victory for the Jays.
Elida got a huge second quarter that gave them a 5-point lead at the half, 24-19, thanks to senior Bo Mathias, McAdams and Desmond Ragin. Ragin added 15 markers and Mathias 5.
“We did a nice job of limiting McAdams and Mathias in the second, who are two of their best players. We did good on defense not allowing very many offensive rebounds in the second half as we allowed 7 in the first half alone,” said St. John’s head coach Aaron Elwer.
The Jays battled to keep it close in the third and went into the fourth quarter down by four, 34-30.
The Blue Jays wasted no time tying the game thanks to Hermiller (4 assists) and junior Scott Recker, who had 11 points. The game ended on a half-court shot that fell short and the Blue Jays got a huge win on the Union Bank Court.
“They outscored us off the bench and in the fourth; that is why we lost,” said Elida head coach Denny Thompson.
The Jays (3-0) canned 16-of-41 shots (4-of-17 long range) for 39 percent and 13-of-19 free throws (68.4%). They grabbed 30 rebounds (11 offensive) as Tyler Hayson had 6. Brandon Hemker added 4 assists. They totaled 12 turnovers and 11 fouls.
The Blue Jays will take on the Van Wert Cougars at the Robert A. Arnzen Gymnasium in Delphos at 6 p.m. (JV start) Saturday.
Elida notched 18-of-48 (37.5%), including 3-of-14 3-pointer, and 7-of-11 charity throws (63.6%). They amassed 25 boards (9 offensive) as Michael Knotts had 8. They added eight turnovers and 13 fouls.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a home game Saturday vs. Coldwater (6:30 p.m. JV start).
In JV action, the Jays (2-1) also won 47-33. Chris Ulm led the way with 15 points.
