Ottoville girls subdue Miller City
MILLER CITY — The Putnam County League got its first look at Ottoville transfer guard Brittany Pohlman on Thursday night as the Lady Green traveled to Miller City for their league opener.
The host Lady Wildcats scored the first basket of the game, a 3-pointer by Marci Wenzinger, and held their guests scoreless for half of the first period before the Green pulled away for a 49-38 victory.
Ottoville was paced by the double-digit scoring of senior Gina Beining (14 markers), while Pohlman added 11 to the mix in the win.
The Lady ’Cats were led by Ashley Schroeder’s 11 points.
Miller City had just two baskets from the field in the first period, both from beyond the arc: Wenzinger’s trifecta to start the game and a long ball from Schroeder later in the period.
The guests were paced by Beining’s 7-point first-period performance; the senior also went 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.
Pohlman scored five in the second frame as the visitors built their lead to double digits and led 27-16 at the break.
The third stanza was nearly even as both teams began to turn the ball over on numerous occasions and with regularity. Ottoville found themselves at the foul line for six opportunities in the third, hitting on just two of the tries. The hosts made just six visits the entire game, nailing 50 percent of their attempts (3).
Carrie Griggs (8 points) drained two from long range in the final canto; the Wildcats outscored their foe 14-12 in the eight minutes but the attempt was short-lived as the foul shooting down the stretch paid off for the Lady Green. They dropped in 4-of-6 attempts in the final period and 9-of-15 (60%) for the contest.
The win moves Ottoville to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the PCL, while the Lady Wildcats fall to 1-5 and 0-2 in PCL play.
Ottoville is back in action Dec. 15 at home versus Ottawa-Glandorf, with a noon JV tip.
