FORT JENNINGS — As the second weekend of boys basketball action tipped off, the Archers from Antwerp made the hike southeast to pay a visit to the Musketeers of Fort Jennings Friday night.
The visit from the Archers turned out to be pleasant for the Musketeers as they prevailed in the matchup 56-47.
The Archers and the Musketeers both came in 1-0, which meant one team would be handed their first loss of the regular season.
Fort Jennings was able to start the game with possession as Derek Giese tipped the ball back to Aaron Chandler. Chandler started the game with a bang as he dribbled the ball down to the arc and popped the shot for a nothing-but-net 3-pointer. Antwerp coach Scott McMichael was forced to call a timeout with 6:31 remaining as the Musketeers were on a 7-0 run. This break did not seem to do much for the Archers as the Musketeers still prevailed in this quarter 19-6.
“When we looked at the scoreboard and saw that it was 19-3, we knew we had finally played some good defense and were able to stop them,” stated Jennings mentor John Von Sossan.
The next period was taken over by the Archers as they overcame the Musketeers 18-10. It seemed to go back-and-forth with scoring throughout. Although the Archers outscored the Musketeers this period, when the buzzer rang for the mid-game break, the Musketeers still were in the lead by five.
The third quarter would be almost identical to the second with the scoring going back-and-forth; this time, Fort Jennings prevailed by scoring 12 to Antwerp’s 10.
“We played well offensively and defensively tonight. I was real proud of A. J. Korte’s defense when he was in as we had him guarding Bob Bragg who didn’t seem to get an open shot when A. J. was in,” Von Sossan continued. “Chandler once again was a solid player for us tonight along with Giese having solid moments. Troy Warnecke was a solid player for us tonight on the offensive end especially.”
Although the scoring may have been pretty close to being balanced again in the fourth quarter, the turnovers and rebounds seemed to escalate. Von Sossan called two timeouts in the quarter to work on getting his team some rest so they could finish the game strong as the Archers seemed to be creeping closer and closer as the game came to an end. After he called his second timeout with a score of 49-40, the Musketeers came out strong in scoring six points and allowing the Archers seven the rest of the way.
During the second half, Jennings outrebounded Antwerp 15-10 but the total difference in rebounds was 32-15. Giese would have a double-double night, tallying 14 points and 10 rebounds. Warnecke had two huge blocks along with tallying 11 for the Musketeers. They canned 21-of-43 shots (4-of-8 3s) and 10-of-18 free throws. They finished with 12 miscues.
“We were able to find out who we need to have out on the floor when we had some people get into foul trouble. We missed our free throws tonight, which caused some problems, but we did finally hit some at the end,” Von Sossan added. “We need to start using our strength inside. Our sophomores played like they had experience last week but this week they played like sophomores.”
The Musketeers are next in action tonight when they travel to Spencerville for a 6:30 p.m. JV start time.
In JV action, the Musketeers (1-1) prevailed 31-25.
