VAN WERT — With the end of the 2007 high school football regular season, it’s time again to recognize the outstanding players from each team in the Van Wert area, which consists of the following: Parkway, Crestview, Van Wert, St. John’s, Jefferson, Wayne Trace, Paulding and Antwerp.
This is the fifth season that the Van Wert All-Area Football Team has been selected. In naming the players to each team, the sports department, along with other area media, consider: the player’s stats; coach’s input; their contribution to their teams; and how their teams have fared during the season. Although everything mentioned above is considered, the main factor for a player to be named to the All-Area squad is based on the player’s performance on the field of play.
The 2007 Player of the Year is Jordan Thompson of Parkway. Thompson proved his versatility on offense, defense and special teams as he led the Panthers to an impressive 8-2 season, just missing the playoffs. Thompson placed in the top four of nine different stat categories: 1st in passing yards with 2,172; 1st in passing touchdowns, 19; 1st in total tackles, 118; 1st in punting average, 36.5; 1st in kickoff average, 45.0; 2nd in rushing TDs, 14; 2nd in quarterback sacks, 7; 4th in rushing yards, 754; and 4th in total points scored, 84. He also received the Defensive MVP award. This was the second straight season that Thompson has collected both defensive First Team/MVP honors.
The Offensive MVP, also a repeater, is Briggs Orsbon of Crestview. Orsbon, topping the first team, led the area in: all-purpose yards with 2,055 yards; rushing, 1,771 yards; and rushing touchdowns, 24. He was also named to the area’s defensive first team.
The Offensive Lineman MVP is junior Stuart Miller of Jefferson, topping the area in “Pancake Blocks” with 18. Miller also finished the season with 90 tackles and was named to the area’s first-team defense and offense.
The final award on offense is the Most Productive Receiver, which went to Parkway’s Josh Fisher. A first-teamer on offense, Fisher was at the top of the receivers’ list the entire season, leading the area in: most receiving yards with 974 yards and most receiving touchdowns, 10. Fisher also recorded the second-best average in the yards-per-catch category — 21.6. He was also named to the first-team defense, recording 68 tackles and leading the area in interceptions with 7.
The Special Teams MVP is junior Matthew Antalis of Jefferson. He proved to be one of the most reliant kickers in the area, connecting on 31-of-31 extra-point attempts, while also leading the area in field goals converted with four. Antalis had the second-longest field goal of the season, connecting on a 35-yarder. Antalis was named as the first-team PAT/field goal kicker. Antalis also made his presence known on offense (2nd team) and on defense (honorable mention).
The Coach of the Year award went to two deserving coaches, Parkway’s Ed Kuhn and Antwerp’s Drew Altimus. Kuhn led the Panthers to respectability in the very competitive Midwest Athletic Conference, registering its first winning season in the past 10 years. Altimus has brought the Archers full cycle; just two seasons ago, Antwerp was in the lower echelon of the Green Meadows Conference. This season, the Archers finished 7-3 and qualified for the state playoffs.
