Delphos Relay, Herald win awards
DELPHOS – Delphos Relay for Life chairs attended a recent Relay University and brought home two awards:
The Relay for Life Research Award for the Delphos Herald and a banner for the Delphos Relay for meeting its 2007 goal, raising $102,313.
During a Relay planning meeting Tuesday night, reporter Mary Grothause accepted the award for The Herald, one of only two such to be presented statewide. A June 15 article featuring Michele Altenburger, who shared her story of battling breast cancer while six months pregnant with twin girls, earned the newspaper the designation.
There’s just 241 days until the 2008 Relay and the committee chairs are busy planning the 15-hour cancer walk with a goal of $105,000. Chairman for the 2008 Relay is Melissa Myers with co-chair Sue Apple. Apple is also active with Relay events and brought a Saturday morning offering of a garage sale to team captains. Teams can have items at their campsites for the sale set for 8-11 a.m. All money raised will go toward team totals.
Thirty-four teams have registered so far, including, Franklin Elementary, DCC Golf, Carriage Inn, Diane Will, First Financial Bank, Sea of Hope, Jan Bollinger, Delphos St. John’s School, D &D Sports, Karrie Langhals (two teams), Yellow Bus Runners, Superior Federal Credit Union.
Gilead Lake Gang, Kristina Clouse, Delphos Herald, LMHS Medical Records, VFW, Jodi Will, Pinkettes, Delphos Ambulatory Care, The Union Bank, Jefferson Faculty, Family Feud, Spencerville Schools, Chief’s, Delphos Pathfinders 4-H, Delphos Jefferson Stars for Tomorrow, Parrotheads, Jodi German, Jim’s Restaurant, Megan Deffenbaugh, Lenny’s Bunch, Hope Fools for a Cure and First Federal Bank.
Some past team fundraisers including luminaries, the auction, Team Relay events and daffodil bears, as well as some new ones will be added. One change in the walk itself is for safety concerns. Walking on the track will be in one direction with walkers in the middle lanes. The outermost and innermost lane will be reserved for those who stop to chat with one another, visit campsites or purchase items.
The next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 20.
