Calvelage 2nd in Allen County meet
LIMA — Tuesday afternoon was more reminiscent of a summer day than an October afternoon with its warm temperatures.
St. John’s senior Erin Calvelage didn’t mind it so much as she finished second at the Allen County Invitational held at Faurot Park.
It snapped her personal string of four straight titles in the event going back to her eighth-grade year.
“I’m disappointed that I didn’t win it but I also had my best time here (20:28), so I can’t be too disappointed,” she acknowledged. “I’ve been in either the high 20-minutes or the low 21’s. I give credit to Andrea (Glenn of Shawnee) for running a good race.”
Calvelage is hoping the hilly course will be good preparation for the regional competition in Troy.
“I know the course at Tiffin, where we’ve run the past three years, is hilly. I have heard the Troy course, where we run this year, is a steady uphill climb at the start,” she explained. “We have two more races before tournaments. Coldwater is the host for both of them and I like that course really well.”
Ever since she broke the school record at the Columbus Grove meet in September, Calvelage acknowledged that she has not been running her best.
“I don’t know why. I ran better today than at Allen East Saturday and that was a flat course,” she added. “I’m hoping that I haven’t peaked. Just like last spring in track, I ran terribly during the regular season and then put it together for the tournament and made it to state. I hope that repeats itself this fall.”
Spencerville easily won the girls side by placing four in the top 10: Ashley Gilroy third, Claire McConnell fourth, Kara Lammers sixth and Kari Wisher 10th. Lyndsie Brown was injured and did not run.
Michelle Conner joined Calvelage in the top 10, finishing eighth, for the Lady Blue Jays, who ended up fourth among the six teams and other individuals.
Kelsey Bagley was the top runner for Elida, who ended up sixth, clocking in an 11th-place finish.
On the boys side, the Bearcats also won behind Jonathan Rex’s fifth place. Steve Hager was eighth and Josh Prater 10th.
Matt Schluneker was 16th for the Bulldogs, who grabbed seventh of the eight units, and Jason Hunlock was 39th.
The Blue Jays, who have been battling injuries and illness, were eighth. Ryan Fischer’s 24th was their best finish, with Alex Bockey 29th.
St. John’s and Elida are in the Coldwater Lions Invitational starting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Spencerville is in the Anna Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.
