John “Dag” Herman

John “Dag” Herman, 82, of Ottoville, died at 9:17 p.m. Thursday at his daughter’s residence.
He was born Aug. 21, 1925, in Putnam County, to Henry and Salome (Byrne) Herman.
On Aug. 19, 1950, he married Marjorie Ann Eggeman, who died on May 13.
Survivors include son William (Debbie) Herman of Medina; daughters Pat (Ted) Elliott of Glandorf and Jean (Thomas) Gemmer of Van Wert; brother Louis Herman of Defiance; sister Luella Huff of Oakwood; mother-in-law Esther Eggeman of Glandorf; grandchildren Joy Miller-Martz, Jared Miller, Kelsey Elliott, William Herman, Jr., Michael Herman, John, Christopher and Jill Gemmer; and great-grandchildren Austin and Tyler McNeilan, Brooke, Erin, Alex and John Gemmer, Gwyneth Martz and Michael Herman.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Herman.
Mr. Herman was a World War II veteran who served in the United States Army and received a Purple Heart.
He was a welder with the Ohio Department of Transportation, a distributor with Meadow Gold Milk and a manager with CW Service in Van Wert.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society, the Ottoville Lions Club, VFW and the Fort Jennings American Legion. He served as co-founder of the Ottoville park, was on village council, Buckeye State 8 of DAV, was an umpire, volunteered as a coach for all ages and sports, was an avid golfer and won Delphos Country Club championships and served on the country club board of directors, was a Chicago Cubs fan, supported Ottoville sports and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Rev. John Stites officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery with graveside military rites by the VFW and American Legion.
Friends may call from 12-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home in Jackson Township.
Preferred memorials are to donor’s choice.
