Arthur L. Hoersten

Arthur Louis Hoersten, 86, of Delphos, died at 10:25 p.m. Sunday at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
He was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Putnam County, to George and M. Frederica (Ruen) Hoersten.
On Oct. 10, 1945, he married Thelma Pohlman in Biloxi, Miss., who survives in Delphos.
Survivors include sons Kenneth (JoAnn) Hoersten of Fremont, Mich., and Thomas (Lisa) Hoersten of Oregon; daughters Jane (Leroy) Wittler and Evelyn (Gerald) Martin of Fort Jennings and Irene Calvelage of Delphos; grandchildren Greg Wittler, Paul (Lyn) Hoersten, Jill Hoersten, Anthony Calvelage, Laura Calvelage, Michelle (Ken) Porr, Louise (Ron) Crawford, Jeffrey Martin, Nicholas Hoersten, Natalie Hoersten and Matthew Hoersten; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son-in-law P. Charles “Chuck” Calvelage; great-grandson Sage Porr; brother Rudolph “Rudy” Hoersten; sisters Alma Lauf and Mildred Wieging, step-mother Helen (Schmitz)  Hoersten; and half-brothers Harry F. and Othmer “Pete” Hoersten.
Mr. Hoersten was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II who served as an airplane mechanic instructor and crew chief. He retired from Fruehauf Corp. in 1984 and from farming in 1990. His memberships included St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the American Legion post 715 in Fort Jennings. He enjoyed farm life, traveling with a camper, World War II history, storytelling, practical jokes, teasing grandchildren and playing Scrabble and euchre.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. James Wieging (nephew) officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, with graveside rites by the Delphos Veterans Council.
Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, where an American Legion service will begin at 6 p.m. and a parish wake service will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Preferred memorials are to the Van Wert County Foundation for the Hoersten Memorial Scholarship or donor’s choice.
