Art Center to open two-artist exhibit of painting, pottery
Beautiful paintings and fine pottery will be displayed at the Wassenberg Art Center, Van Wert, from Wednesday through August 10. The exhibit features the work of watercolor and oil artist Larry Golba of Toledo, along with pottery by Brandon Knott of Continental. Exhibit hours are 1-5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays) and admission is free. The show is sponsored by Ralph and Jane Stuckman and the Van Wert County Fruit Growers.
Golba’s work has the crisp freshness that comes from long years of observing nature firsthand. He enjoys plein-air painting (painting on location outdoors).
“My first venture into plein-air painting took place in 1964 at the age of 15,” says Golba. “I still recall the painting: a small watercolor of a red brick house on a cloudy summer afternoon. Many years have passed and I have painted hundreds of plein-air watercolors and oils since then, but I still recall the day, the special light, temperature, sounds and even some aromas associated with painting each of them. Plein-air can be a total sensory experience.”
Golba received his bachelor of arts degree from Bowling Green State University in 1971 and a Master of Arts from Eastern Michigan University in 1976. He taught art in the Bedford Public Schools system from 1971 to 2001, served on the Art Education Faculty at EMU in 1976 and has conducted many painting classes and watercolor workshops.
Golba is an exhibiting member and president of the Northwestern Ohio Watercolor Society. He is also a member of the Toledo Artists Club, the Toledo Tile Club, the Monday Morning Painters and the Ohio Plein Air Society. He is listed in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” His works have been accepted into hundreds of juried shows and have won numerous awards, including two Grumbacher Gold Medallions for Excellence in Watercolor and the Reuben Counts Award at the Wassenberg Art Center’s 49th Annual June Art Exhibit. Several of his watercolor paintings have been included in shows at the Toledo Museum of Art and the Canton Art Institute. He was Toledo Artists Club Artist of the Year in 1976 and received a First Award in Oils at the 14th Great Outdoor Paint-Out at the T.C. Steele Historic Site in Nashville, Indiana, in 2002.
Golba’s work may be seen at the Kismet Gallery in Toledo and Perrysberg.
