The Rev. Howard Paul Spitnale, 86, died at 10:40 p.m. Saturday at at Middletown Regional Hospital, Middletown.
He was born July 7, 1920, in Cloverdale, to Roy and Ida (Dunlap) Spitnale, who preceded him in death.
On July 23, 1942, in Whitewater, Ind., he married Lura Joyce Moye, who survives.
Survivors also include a son, Nelson (Lynn) Spitnale of Springfield, Va.; a daughter, Diana (the Rev. Duane) Miller of Troy Mich.; former daughter-in-law, Sue Munson of Springfield, Va.; a brother, Marvin (Millie) Spitnale of Delphos; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Spitnale of Cloverdale; former sister-in-law Harriet Healy of Fort Lauderdale, Fla; sister-in-law, Donna Hunt of Columbus, Ga.; brother-in-law, the Rev. Jim (Rosemary) Mansfield of Willis, Ga., former sister-in-law Marybeth Hunt of Penney Farms, Fla.; four grandchildren, David (Loreen) Miller of Jamestown, Mich., Elizabeth (Andy) Williams of Chicago, Thomas (Cortney) Spitnale of Salem, Va., and Carrie (Joshua) Nowell of Sterling, Va.; two stepgranddaughters, Carolyn Koening of San Diego, and Kim Rodrigue of Manassas, Va.; six great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and friend Katie Deetrick.
He was preceded in death by two brothers Gene and Kenneth; a brother-in-law John Hunt; and a great-grandchild.
Rev. Spitnale graduated from Continental High School, Taylor University in Indiana and Westminster Theological (now Wesley) Seminary in Maryland. He was a student pastor in Osseo, Yale, McCabe and Melvindale, all in Michigan; and Taylorsville, Md. He pastored in the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church at Carthage and Wilke in Cincinnati, Franklin First, St. Paul in Napoleon, Grace in Zanesville and First in Troy. He was district superintendent of the Wilmington District from 1971 to 1977. He was an associate director of corporate development for the Otterbein Retirement Home from 1982 to 2004. He served on several conference boards and was trustee of several agencies for the church.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Continental, the Rev. Gary Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Cascade Cemetery, Perry Township, Putnam County.
Friends may call one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. July 14 at Otterbein United Methodist Church, Otterbein Lebanon Retirement Community near Lebanon, the Rev. Gary Hughes officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Endowment Fund for Benevolent Care at Otterbein Home.
