Lady Bulldogs 2nd at Fostoria track
FOSTORIA — The Columbus Grove Lady Bulldogs finished a strong second to the Liberty-Benton Lady Eagles in the Fostoria Division III Regional Track and Field meet at Memorial Stadium Friday evening.
The Lady Eagles scored 67 points to 45 for the Lady Bulldogs.
Columbus Grove’s Bulldogs took fourth in the boys standings with 42 points.
Defending state discus champion, Grove’s Cory Meuleman, edged Norwalk St. Paul’s West Stein to claim the regional title with a toss of 164-6 versus 163-8 for Stein.
“I’m happy to get back to state,” Meuleman stated.
Lady Bulldog Aubrie Stechschulte (16-6 3/4) edged LB’s Paige Vaupel (16-4 3/4) to claim the long jump.
“I just don’t change what got me here. I keep the system,” she commented.
Stechschulte also qualified as part of the 4×100-meter relay team, which also was comprised of Jamie Scott, Amanda Schroeder and Ella Diller, taking fourth with a time of 51.32.
She did not advance in 100-meter dash (sixth in 12.86) and the pole vault (9-4).
“I had fatigue in the legs,” she explained.
Bulldog Heath Nickles won the pole vault (15-7), which set a new meet mark in that event.
“The warm weather helped a lot,” Nickles related. “I thought I vaulted a lot higher than 15-7. I had to vault five minutes after the 110 high hurdles. I tripped and fell down to one knee at the start and couldn’t catch him (Lucas Horstman of Cory-Rawson, who took fourth — 14.96 — to Nickles’ 15.17). The sun drains you. I’m going to state to compete and not just show up.”
The Lady Bulldogs’ 4×400-meter relay squad, comprised of Jaimie Lewis, Paige Heffner, Diller and Schroeder, almost caught up with Western Reserve’s team, falling by a mere 4:11.11 to 4:11.54.
“We got together to get a school record,” Heffner stated. “We were two seconds off our school record.”
“We can cry tears of happiness, not tears of sadness like we did the last two years,” Lewis noted. “We kept thinking that we had to qualify. Our goal was to break the school record.”
Lady Lancer Katie Honigford took third in the 800-meter run (2:19.17), while Ottoville freshman Molly Maag took fourth (2:20.65).
“I felt really good,” Honigford commented. “I wanted a 1:02. But my goal was to make it down to state. This year was the first time I ran by myself. I ran relays when I went to state before. I’m nervous to go by myself.”
Lancer coach Matt Langdon was happy with his team’s performances.
“Katie got third in the 800, ran her career best and broke the school record,” he commented. “Last year, she finished fifth. She took three or four seconds off her best. This is the first time for Kaleb (Baucom). He’s disappointed. Now he knows what it really feels like to be here. Kylie was in the opposite place this year. She had made it in the mile last year.”
Spencerville’s Anna Raines finished eighth in the discus (115-3).
“I didn’t do well,” Raines said. “I knew I had to relax. I had to do my best.”
Spencerville’s Luke Brenneman noted that it was an honor to be running in the 3,200-meter run.
“It wasnt my greatest time. I’m glad I made it here, one of the best 64 runners in the state,” Brenneman added.
